The Rescue

Chapter Ten
The Rescue

Good Morning you two sleepy heads. I was just about to leave to explore Camden Corners. I want to get as many shots as I can before the sun rises too far,” said Julianna as she strapped her camera case on her hip.
Aren't you going to have any breakfast, Julianna? I heard last night that the breakfast chef is excellent,” said Melanie.
Mama said I could have pancakes. Come with us Julianna.”
No, darlin', not this morning. You and your mama will have fun together while I take lots of pictures.”
Again, Samantha had a worried look on her face. “Julianna, I wish you would stay with us. I'm afraid the rocks will hurt you.”
I promise you Samantha, I won't be climbing any rocks.” Julianna looked at Melanie and they both were puzzled by Samantha's seeming fear of rocks all of a sudden.
After she left, Melanie questioned Samantha. “What makes you think Julianna will be hurt by rocks, dear? I'm sure she will be very careful.”
Iris told me the rocks would hurt her. I don't want Julianna to be hurt, Mama.”
You know Iris lived a long time ago, don't you? Maybe you had a dream about her. Sometimes our dreams seem real, but they aren't. They are just dreams. Now, let's go down to the restaurant and order you some pancakes.”
May I have chocolate milk too?”
They walked by the gallery on the way to the dining room. “Hello Iris,” said Samantha.
Melanie was astonished at the resemblance the girl in the photo had to her daughter. She wondered how that could be. It was true Samantha had some Taylor traits but according to the story, Iris was not a Taylor by birth. The whole thing was crazy, thought Melanie. She decided to put it out of her mind until they ate their breakfast. It was difficult to think straight when her stomach was growling.
They sat down at a table near the window. It looked like it was going to be a beautiful day. She had intended to look more closely at the display cases and journals in the lobby but wondered if maybe she and Samantha should walk through the town instead. She didn't want to risk causing her daughter more anxiety if she were to dwell too much on those photos.
Look, Mama. There is Mr. Kevin. May I go over and say hello to him?”
Sure enough, Kevin was sitting at a table with a red haired beauty. He had a wide grin on his face.
Maybe we'd better not disturb Mr. Kevin. He looks like he is busy with a young lady at the moment.” Melanie was glad Kevin didn't have to spend the night all by himself in his suite. She was equally glad she hadn't been the one to keep him company.
After a filling breakfast, Melanie and Samantha toured Main Street. They walked past the old firehouse that had been transformed into a restaurant. There was a bronze statue with an old fashioned fire truck and a large dog perched in the passenger seat. “Look, Mama, a dalmatian.”
It most certainly is, Samantha. Your great great great uncle drove a truck like that and I'll bet he had a dog just like that one to help him put out fires.”
They walked by the bakery that belonged to Diana Taylor years ago. It was obvious it had been enlarged but the building was still charming. The sweets in the window looked very tempting. “Shall we buy some cookies to take back to the hotel for later? What kind would you like?”
I like the ones that look like daisies, I think Julianna would like them too.”
They entered the store and both salesgirls stopped in their tracks. “Miss Fairchild! How lovely you decided to stop in our shop. This must be your daughter. What a darling little girl. Hello sweetheart.”
You have a charming shop here. I imagine it looked quite the same back when Diana Taylor was the proprietor. Diana is one of my ancestors. She may have been an aunt by marriage. I'm not really sure but I intend to study some of the journals back at the hotel.”
Oh yes, everyone in town is excited about the journals. Many of us are connected directly to the folks who wrote them. Mary Lu and I are distant cousins of Diana. We think we inherited our love of baking from her. What a thrill to have a real life movie star in our little shop.”
A movie star who has a sweet tooth. I just say words someone else has written. You two ladies are the talented ones to be able to make so many beautiful cakes and cookies.”
Melanie and Samantha left the shop with Samantha holding the sack of cookies. They left two giggling ladies behind who vowed to see every one of Melanie Fairchild's movies again. After all, she was kin.
How about you and I go back to the hotel and put on our bathing suits. I think it's warm enough to go in the pool.”
Yes, Mama. I can show you how fast I can swim now. Julianna doesn't know how to swim. Maybe I can teach her.”
The pool was refreshing and not too crowded. Most of the VIPs had already left the hotel or were waiting for limos and taxis to take them to the airport in Greensboro. Melanie was going to make the most of her short stay in Camden Corners. She was enjoying the easy pace of living.
She was grateful she had been lucky enough to catch the attention of one of the top producers in Hollywood. When she started out in the business she never thought she would be making as many movies as she had. Granted, they were mostly light romantic comedies, but she had made enough money doing them that she and Samantha would never have to worry about finances. After her last picture with Kevin Abbott, she wouldn't be surprised if their appeal as a couple was waning. She would be turning thirty before too long. Although Kevin held his age well, she wondered how much longer he could play the carefree young playboy who falls for the chaste ingenue.

Julianna was in her glory. She was capturing the beautiful scenery of the east. She loved photographing California, but was happy to have an entirely different landscape before her. She was determined to get just the right angle as the sun was baking the vineyards to the west. She was happy to find a pier and walked out almost to the end to capture the photo. She moved just a little closer to the edge. Julianna had never learned how to swim and because of that had fear of water that was deeper than her waist. She was focusing the camera when she took a step back and lost her balance. The camera flew out of her hand and landed on the dock as she felt herself falling past the rocks on the side of the pier.
Samantha was happily playing in the water when suddenly she let out a blood curdling scream. “Julianna! Don't go near the rocks! Julianna.”
She climbed out of the pool and started running toward the lake, her little legs moving as fast as she could make them go. She called Julianna's name all the way to the shore.
Melanie ran after her. “Samantha, come back.” When she finally caught up with her daughter she looked in horror as she saw Julianna fall from the edge of the pier.
Rick Marino was enjoying a quiet Saturday morning in his new Bayliner cabin cruiser. He was passing the no wake area and cut the engine. He wanted to get a good look at The Merryweather. Rick had lived in Camden Corners his entire life. He was amazed at the transformation of the old mansion. He'd stopped by for the grand opening the night before and wanted to get a better look at it from the lake. He heard a young girl's voice although he had a difficult time understand what she was saying. He looked up and saw a woman pointing toward the end of the pier. That was when he noticed someone was in trouble. She was thrashing around frantically. He slowly started the motor to get closer to her and then put it in neutral as he grabbed the life preserver. He backed the boat close to her and called to her to catch the preserver. She was slipping under water. Rick jumped over the side holding the life preserver and dove underwater catching her legs and pushing her to the surface. She was still panicking and fighting him but he managed to get her to the boat. Luckily she was just a little bit of thing and he was able to push her head first into the boat. He climbed in after her as she coughed and choked on the water she swallowed.
Through tears of relief, she looked at him pleadingly. “My camera is on the pier.”
Rick began to laugh. “You were about thirty seconds away from death and all you are worried about is a little Instamatic camera?”
Please!” she was shaking almost uncontrollably.
Rick lifted the seat and brought out a blanket covering her shivering body. He turned the cruiser toward the pier and spotted the camera. He recognized right away that it was a very expensive piece of equipment. “Are you a professional photographer? My family has a history with cameras and I can tell this is a very good one.”
Julianna didn't answer him. She was staring at the rocks that surrounded the pier. “Samantha told me to stay away from the rocks. She knew this was going to happen to me.” She noticed Samantha and her mother standing on the shore. She stood up and waved to them.
What are you doing lady? Are you determined to kill yourself today? If so, please don't take me with you. Now sit down until I get this boat docked and you safely on shore.”
Samantha was jumping up and down when the boat pulled into the dock. Holly and Tracy had heard the commotion and they, along with several other people, greeted a very wet Julianna.
Rick, what happened?” Holly asked. “Julianna, are you alright? Let's get you inside and into some dry clothes.”
Wait,” said Julianna, “Samantha was right about the rocks. She told me to stay away from rocks. I didn't realize until this man went back to the pier to get my camera, that it is surrounded by rocks. I suppose it could be a coincidence but it does make you wonder.”
I'm not so sure it was a coincidence,” said Melinda. “Samantha had no idea you were on that pier but she started to scream your name and ran to the shore looking in your direction.”
Holly spoke up, “After everyone calms down and Julianna dries off, I want to show you one of the entries in Nettie Crowley's journal. This is not the first time something like this has happened.”
Julianna realized suddenly that she hadn't even thanked her rescuer. “Oh my, I am so sorry sir. How can I ever thank you for saving my life today?”
Anytime ma'am,” laughed Rick. “If you would like to thank me, I'd be interested in hearing more about this little girl's premonition. Those journals are fascinating.”
Holly introduced Rick to the ladies. “Rick is a columnist and photographer for the Camden Corners Chronicle. Unfortunately, he may be leaving us soon to move to Los Angeles for a job with the Los Angeles Times.”
You are moving to LA? I go to school there. I'm studying journalism myself.”
Samantha was smiling as she whispered a little too loudly, “Are Rick and Julianna going to get married, Mama?”
Everyone laughed. “Is that another premonition, little one?” Rick asked.
I don't know what that word means but I think, yes, it is.”
Julianna didn't think she'd mind if Samantha was right on that one.
Melanie, Samantha and Julianna excused themselves to change out of their wet clothes. Julianna took one look at herself in the mirror and realized what a disheveled mess she was. Rick would not be impressed with this sight.
I don't think Rick noticed the seaweed in your hair. He was having a hard time taking his eyes off you today.”
That's because he saved my life. I have never felt such terror before. The first thing I'm going to do when we get home is sign up for swimming lessons.”
Yes, you'll have to learn how to swim if you will be riding around in a cabin cruiser.”
That thought never entered my mind,” laughed Julianna.
Rick was filled with questions. He hadn't recognized Melanie with her hair pulled back and wearing no makeup. She was still a beautiful woman but looked different than she did on screen. He asked what Holly knew about Julianna.
Julianna is Samantha's nanny. I believe she and Melanie are friends as well as employer and employee. It's obvious Julianna loves Samantha and she loves her too. Melanie told me Julianna has no family. She is putting herself through school. Being a nanny gives her a place to stay and helps with her tuition. She seems to be a very nice young lady, Rick. You may want to look her up when you move to LA.”
I plan to do that. I wonder if she is on duty this evening. I know a nice quiet little restaurant she might enjoy.”
I'm not on duty tonight and I would be delighted to dine with you Mr. Marino.”
Wow! You clean up well Julianna. I must say though, you look mighty fine with seaweed in your hair.”
Tracy took Samantha to the playroom off the lobby. A family had checked in that afternoon and a little girl her age was playing there. Holly pulled out Nettie's journal and read it aloud.
It was the strangest thing. Ethel Fulbright was compelled to buy an old crystal ball. We all had a reaction to it. Bright lights would glow from it, it almost seemed to be warning us something bad was going to happen. Then at the Founder's Day picnic, little Iris Taylor was struck by a bolt of lightning. Just minutes before, I asked Cody Hill to fetch her. He was very close to her when she was hit. Without any training or even knowing what he was doing, he pounded on her little chest and breathed into her mouth. Her parents, fearing Cody was hurting their daughter, found they could not move their feet. Iris woke up and told her adoptive mother that her mother, Mavis told her she loved her. We all agreed something supernatural had happened and none of us spoke a word about the incident again. The crystal ball seemed to lose its brightness after that day. It was in pieces at the bottom of our trash barrel and had become nothing more than a pile of broken glass.
That could have been a coincidence too,” said Melanie. “The strange thing is, I just took another look at Iris' photograph. She has long dark hair and she is the same age as Samantha but that is where the resemblance ends. They are both pretty little girls but don't look a thing alike.”
Whether there was any hocus pocus going on today or not, I'm glad I heard Samantha's cries for help. Otherwise I wouldn't have met you,” Rick said as he smiled at Julianna.
And I'd have been at the bottom of the lake,” said Julianna with a shiver.
Let me show you ladies around Camden Corners. We can grab some lunch while we're out.”
You two go ahead. I'll relieve Tracy from her child watching duty. Samantha has met a new friend and I'm happy to say this one is a real girl. I have some reading to catch up on and I can do that while the girls play. Go have fun.”
Thanks Melanie. We'll be back in a few hours.”

Her Name is Iris

Chapter Nine
Her Name is Iris

The gala in the ballroom of The Merryweather was in full swing. Melanie Fairchild was dancing with her latest costar, Kevin Abbott. Speculation was high that a romance was in the offing for Miss Fairchild and Mr. Abbott. There wasn't any truth to the rumor. The love of Melanie's life had died in skiing accident three years ago, leaving her to raise their daughter, Samantha, alone.
Melanie, let's escape through the back door. I'll have room service send a chilled bottle of champagne to my suite. We will have our own party,” the handsome actor said it in such a way Melanie was tempted, but only for a split second.
Kevin, you know my daughter is with me and I don't want to leave her alone any longer than I have to.”
She's not alone, dear. Her nanny is with her and I know you trust the woman or she wouldn't be within ten feet of Samantha.”
Julianna is a wonderful nanny, but I'm her mother and it's important that I am with her during the night. She is in a strange bed and may wake up and be frightened. Kevin, you know I am not ready for any kind of relationship. There are at least five different young ladies drooling over you as we speak. Let's go sit down and you can ask any one of them for the next dance. I'm sure the lucky girl will be delighted.”
Someday you are going to regret breaking my heart like this Melanie. You will wake up in that big feather bed, your daughter will be off and married with five kids and you'll think about old Kevin and wish you'd taken me up on my offer.”
A big feather bed, huh? Sounds rather cozy, maybe my five grandchildren will hop in it with me and we can laugh as we watch some of our old movies on a Saturday night.”
Our old movies will be classics.”
Not the last one. It was a dud and we both know it.”
Maybe, but we are making a ton of money because people like seeing us together. Just think what a humanitarian thing it would be if you took me up on my offer. People think we are the perfect couple.”
We are the perfect couple on screen. Kevin, you would be bored to death with me if I was in your life. I normally don't hang around this long at a party if I go at all. I agreed to come here tonight because some family members were from Camden Corners. Their last name was Taylor. That was my name before someone thought Fairchild would sell more seats in the movie theater.”

In Melanie's suite, Samantha and Julianna were watching a Shirley Temple movie. Samantha wanted Mama to ask the child actress to come over to play when they returned to California. Julianna tried to explain that the movie was made many years ago and the little girl was a big lady now. She was as old as her Grandma Taylor. Samantha thought that was the funniest thing she had ever heard and giggled so hard she fell off the sofa and on to the floor.
Didn't Mama look very beautiful tonight, Julianna?”
Your mama always looks beautiful, pumpkin.”
I think so too. I would like to go downstairs to see Iris again. May we, Julianna?
Who is Iris, sweetie? I don't remember seeing any other little girls in the hotel.”
She isn't a real little girl. Well, she is real, but she is in a picture on the wall. She is with her mama and papa and her sister and brother.”
I did see some pictures when we were checking in. I would like to see them again. I think it would be fun to go to the lobby. We can't stay too long because it's almost your bedtime.”
Samantha held Julianna's hand as they skipped down the hall to the winding staircase. Samantha pretended she was a princess as she glided down the stairs giggling all the way.
Good evening, Miss Samantha. My, you look lovely tonight in your ball gown,” said Holly as she glanced up and saw the pretty little girl.
Samantha giggled again. “This isn't a ball gown, it's my sundress.”
I'm sorry madam, it must have been your glass slippers that fooled me,” Holly said cheerfully. “Is there anything I can help you ladies with?”
We came to see Iris,” said Julianna. “The princess here was telling me her photo was hanging on the wall.”
Please do look. Samantha, I think Iris was just about your age when that photo was taken. Come to think of it, you look very much like her.”
They walked over to the row of framed photographs. “There's Iris. She's the one who is smiling at us.”
She does look like you, Samantha. You have her eyes. Isn't that the strangest thing. They say everyone has a double. I think we may have found Samantha's.”
Iris was a very special little girl,” said Holly who had read every journal and knew the history of the townspeople very well. “Diana and Joe Taylor didn't think they were going to have any children until the day Joe found Iris sleeping alongside the firehouse dalmatian. Joe was a fireman. Anyway, they adopted Iris and soon after they found they were expecting another child and another after that. Iris brought them luck.”
Iris lived in the mountains before she came to Camden Corners. She didn't have a mama and her papa forgot she was in the buckboard he was driving to California and he left town without her. He never came back because he died just like her mama.”
Oh dear, I hope someone on our staff didn't tell you that.” Holly looked at Julianna, “I'm sorry, we want everyone to enjoy their visit here, not be forced to listen to sad stories.”
Iris told me,” Samantha said innocently.
It must have been Melanie. She is an actress and maybe found the truth interesting. She may have been looking at the pictures while I was making sure the room was in order. This photography is excellent. Someone in Camden Corners was very talented back then.”
His name was Tony Marino. He took many photos of his friends and neighbors when he was just a young boy. He grew up to be a photo journalist during the second world war. He won a Pulitzer for the photographs he took during that time.”
Of course, I have studied his work. What a thrill to see these original photos. I'm studying photography. I work part time for Melanie and attend classes during the school year. I would like to be a photojournalist just like Mr. Marino was.”
Good for you Julianna, I'm sure you will find some beautiful photo opportunities in Camden Corners. I realize I'm partial, but I think we have a lovely town.”
I'm planning to do just that tomorrow morning. Melanie has nothing scheduled and will be able to spend time with Samantha while I go off with my camera.”
Don't go near the rocks, okay, Julianna,” Samantha said with a worried look on her face.
What made you say that, sweetie?
I don't know. Just don't climb on the rocks.”
Julianna and Holly looked at each other. This happy little girl suddenly looked like she had the weight of the world on her shoulders.
Julianna said, “Maybe we should get you upstairs and tucked into bed. It's been a very busy day and you must be tired. We will come back tomorrow to look at all these wonderful pictures. Maybe we will hear more stories that make us smile.
Good night ladies,” said Holly.
Good night, Miss Holly.” Samantha turned toward the photograph on the wall and said, “Good night, Iris.”
Holly had never seen such a strong reaction to any of the pictures before. She would have to check with Julianna in the morning. She was hoping Samantha would have forgotten all about the little girl from so long ago.

Melanie was more than ready to call it a day. She had done her duty and made an appearance at the gala. She wanted to get to her suite, kick her shoes off and give Samantha a good night kiss. Kevin didn't argue with her. He had already spotted a pretty redhead on the opposite side of the room. It was obvious from the looks she was giving him that she would be a more willing partner for the evening than his good friend Melanie Fairchild.
I'm back. Where are my two best girls?” Melanie thought of Julianna as a very dear friend as well as an employee. Julianna was a few years younger than Melanie. She was hired after Melanie interviewed at least thirty people for the nanny position. Samantha had taken to Julianna immediately. Julianna needed a place to live while she attended college and the situation worked out well for everyone.
Here we are Mama,” came the sweet little voice of her daughter. She was bathed and in her pajamas with the smell of toothpaste still on her lips as she wrapped her arms around her mother. “Did you have fun at the ball, Mama?”
Oh yes, darling. I had a wonderful time but I couldn't wait to get back here to tuck you in bed and read you a story.”
Did you dance with Mr. Kevin? Is he going to be my new daddy? Jimmy Harvey said he is.”
Jimmy Harvey doesn't know what he is talking about. Mr. Kevin plays my husband sometimes in movies but we are just friends. If I ever choose a new daddy for you, you will be the first to know, not silly Jimmy Harvey,” Melanie reassured her daughter. One of the drawbacks to being a success in the movies was that your private life was difficult to keep private. Outside of the movie studio, she and Kevin had never so much as shared a kiss but according to some of the magazine covers at the grocery store checkout, they were having a torrid love affair.
After only a few pages of her storybook, Samantha was sleeping soundly. Melanie walked back out into the living room. “What did the two of you do this evening?”
We watched Shirley Temple in an old movie. Samantha wants you to invite her over to play when we return home. I tried to explain she wasn't a little girl anymore but I don't think Samantha quite understands. How was Kevin tonight? I imagine he was trying to lure you to his suite.”
You know Kevin. I don't know what he would do if I took him up on it. I'm sure he won't be alone tonight, as I was leaving he was on his way across the room to give a thrill to an attractive redhead. My guess is she won't be turning him away.” They both laughed. “Who is Iris that Samantha was talking about?”
She's the little girl in the photo on the wall downstairs. Didn't you talk to her about Iris?”
No, I don't remember seeing a photo. It must have been in that gallery they have just off the lobby. I was hoping to explore that tomorrow but I didn't see it earlier. Julianna, what's wrong? You seem disturbed about something.”
It's probably nothing, just a strange feeling I have about that photo. The little girl looks so much like Samantha and Samantha seems very taken with the picture. She knew the child was an orphan who had been abandoned in Camden Corners. She was born in the mountains and later adopted by the Taylor family. Holly Mackenzie was with us downstairs. She was surprised that anyone on her staff would tell a little girl a sad story like that. Samantha wasn't out of our eyesight at anytime yesterday and we both know she didn't talk to any strangers. There is one more thing. I mentioned I would be taking my camera and exploring Camden Corners. She became quite upset and told me to stay off the rocks. It was all very disconcerting, it made me and Holly both uncomfortable.”
How strange, and the story about this little girl was true? She had been abandoned, did Holly know that for a fact?”
According to the journals, it is true. Back in 1903 to about 1925, several of the ladies of the village wrote journals. Apparently they tell the stories of the day to day lives of all the folks who lived here back then. Holly has read everyone and said that particular story was true. She told Samantha the little girl was adopted by a childless couple and brought them luck in expanding their family. Samantha added the part about being an orphan and left alone in the town.”
I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation for Samantha's reaction although I can't imagine what it is. I'll talk with her tomorrow. Maybe it's just her imagination working overtime.”
Shall we watch some television. I'm too wound up after the gala downstairs to fall asleep right away.”
I think I'll go to my room. I bought some postcards earlier and thought I'd send them to my nieces. They love getting their own mail. I'll just write a message on them so they are ready to mail tomorrow. I also want to check my film supply. I plan to take many photos tomorrow. This is small town living at its best and I want to capture every detail of it.”
Good night Julianna.”
Good night boss.”

The Gala

Chapter Eight
The Gala

I'll leave you two alone,” said Tracy. “Again, I apologize for interrupting your honeymoon. It is not the intention of The Merryweather to invade our guest's privacy.”
Don't give it a second thought, Tracy. It feels good to be able to share our secret with someone. I did telephone my mother earlier to let her know of our marriage. We didn't talk too long since Daddy was within earshot and Mother wanted to break the news gently. He will not be pleased that I am dropping out of the race.”
Or that she married a Democrat,” added Ken.
Tracy winced. She wasn't terribly political herself but she knew of Clayton Holmes' reputation on the floor of the senate. She didn't envy the young couple when the diehard Republican learned the news.
Meanwhile in a small bungalow in Bermuda, Clayton Holmes' suspicion was growing. “Betty, you are hiding something from me. I can always tell when you aren't being completely truthful. Is everything alright with Margie? I know she has had a grueling schedule lately, but she'd better get accustomed to it because when she wins the election, her time will not be her own.”
Clayton, sit down. Let me pour you a brandy.” Betty knew her husband would blow his top when he heard the news about their daughter. She wasn't afraid for herself but she was concerned his temper would get the better of him and worried about his ailing heart.
Betty, I do not want any brandy. Now tell me exactly what is happening. If you don't, I will call Margie myself.”
Clayton, control yourself. You are not going to like what I have to say but please remember you taught your daughter to be an independent young woman. You know she is only running for your old seat because she was afraid you would seek another term and jeopardize your health.”
Get to the point, woman. What has the foolish girl done?”
Margie is not foolish, my dear. You are the one who was foolish to think she would find happiness in politics. Come to think of it, that's exactly what she did. She has found her own happiness and his name is Ken Grayson. Margie and Ken were married earlier today. Margie will withdraw from the race early next week.”
Married? My little girl is married to a Democrat? How could she do this to me? Why didn't you stop that scoundrel from taking advantage of our little girl. He knew he couldn't win the election on his own so he married my angel. Well, we will have the marriage annulled. That's all there is to it. I'm sure Margie is regretting her foolishness as we speak. I'll call Jack Spinelli and have him start drawing up the papers.”
Clayton, listen to yourself. You are not on the floor of the senate now. Margie is in love with Ken Grayson. Ken will be dropping out of the race too. Neither one of the children wanted a career in politics. They were both pressured into running. I met Ken just before we left for our vacation here. I didn't tell you then because I was afraid of your reaction. Ken is a wonderful man. I wish you could see the way he looks at Margie and she looks back at him. It reminds me of the way you used to look at me when we first met.”
I want to talk to my daughter. What is the phone number for that place she is spending the weekend? I can't believe she is with a man. My poor innocent child.”
Clayton, your poor innocent child is thirty years old. You would think she was 14 the way you are acting. You are not going to call Margie. She is enjoying her first day as a married woman and she doesn't need you to put a damper on her honeymoon.”
Betty, I will never forgive you for not keeping me informed about this relationship. If I'd known it would never have progressed this far. Now, pack our bags. We are leaving for home today. I will put a stop to Margie's foolishness myself.”
Clayton be quiet. I will pack our bags and we will return home to see our daughter this evening. She and Ken will be at a gala being sponsored by The Merryweather, a new resort in Camden Corners. I have heard many wonderful things about the old mansion. You will put a smile on your face, embrace your daughter and offer your hand to the man Margie has chosen to be the father of your grandchildren.”
Clayton knew Betty had reached the end of her patience. He also knew when it was time for him to toe the line. It would surprise his former colleagues if they knew this tiny woman was able to control him. She always let him blow off steam but put an end to his tirades when she'd heard enough. He still didn't like the idea that Margie had a wedding without him. He had often thought of the time he would walk her down the aisle to the man of her dreams. Someone hand picked by Clayton, of course. He couldn't wait to see his daughter and make sure she was as happy as Betty seemed to think she was. Maybe he would give this fellow Ken a chance. He still didn't like it, but he would try for Margie's sake. He wondered when he had stopped looking at Betty the way she said he did when they first met. He was still crazy about her. She was his rock. He could never have faced some of those tough days in Washington without her by his side. Maybe he'd better start looking closely at her again. She was still a beauty, the few wrinkles she had only made her more appealing to him.
Let me help you with the packing dear,” Clayton said as he took her in his arms. “Betty, I don't tell you this often enough but you have made me a very happy man. I love you more now than I did when we were first married. Do you remember your father trying to talk you out of marrying me? Maybe no man is good enough for our precious daughters. Ken Grayson is a very lucky man and so am I.”
This was the Clayton Betty loved best. The gentle man whose eyes shown brightly with the love he felt for her. She loved him too and knew he would come around to accepting Margie's choice. She hoped it wouldn't be too long before the grandchildren started coming along. Clayton will be a wonderful grandpa, I just know it.
Guess I'd better get back to my suite. Jerry and Sondra will be banging on our doors soon to hurry us along. I feel like a fifteen year old sneaking around like this,” said Ken still holding his bride.
What were you doing in ladies' hotel rooms at fifteen?” Margie said smiling up into his eyes.
I was thinking more along the lines of behind the bleachers during football games. I wish I'd known you back then, I'll bet you were a knockout.”
At fifteen I had a mouthful of braces and refused to smile. I'll have to show you Mother's old photo album one of these days. Believe me, I was far from being a knockout.”
Well, you are a knockout now. I'd better leave while I still can. It's going to be so hard not to stare at you this evening. I'll be glad when we can tell the world about us.”
They shared one last kiss that would have to hold them until the party was over.
Everything seems to be going well, Tracy,” said Holly. “I hope we ordered enough champagne. I didn't realize how much VIPs could drink.”
They do seem to be kicking up their heels. Did you see who pulled up in a limo a little while ago? It's Senator Holmes and his wife. They weren't on the guest list but I told Leonard to invite them in. Maybe we should get out there to welcome them. I hope there isn't going to be a scene.”
Why would there be a scene, Tracy? Tell me what you know. I can see by the look in your eye that you are holding back.”
I'll tell you later. I gave my word that I wouldn't say anything and it's something you would feel compelled to share with Steve if I told you.”
Let's see, it must have something to do with the senator's daughter, Margie. I know, she and her opponent have fallen madly in love and are eloping at midnight.” Holly said with a chuckle. She took one look at Tracy whose jaw had dropped. “That's it, isn't it? I was only kidding, but oh how romantic. I won't tell anyone, Tracy, not even Steve.”
You are almost right, Holly. They are already married. They were holding off making an announcement until Tracy could tell her father on Sunday. Looks like the cat will be out of the bag a little sooner than that.”
Good evening Senator and Mrs. Holmes,” Tracy said with a welcoming smile. “We are very happy you will be joining us this evening. I'm Tracy Robinson and this is Holly Mackenzie.”
The senator was obviously distracted and glanced around the room no doubt looking for his daughter. Betty Holmes told the girls how impressive The Merryweather is. “I have read all about your renovation project and the journals you found. You have done a wonderful job with this place. I hope you will forgive my husband and me for crashing your party. Our daughter is here this evening and my husband was anxious to talk with her. We will be on our way shortly. I would like to return one day soon. I'm fascinated with the journals you found and would love to take a look at them.”
Please, Mrs. Holmes, you and your husband are more than welcome to stay this evening. The journals are kept in cases but our staff is in the process of copying the pages. They are rough copies but readable and quite interesting. You are more than welcome to look them over.”
Betty, I see Margie. Ladies, our daughter is inside, if you will excuse us?”
Betty smiled at the girls. “I would love to see the journals, I'll book a room for later next week. Clayton can go fishing while I examine them.”
Daddy? What are you doing here?” Margie could tell by the look on her mother's face that she had broken the news to her father.
We came to see our daughter, we missed you dear. Will you excuse us ma'am?” Clayton said to the woman Margie was having a conversation with at the time.
Let's go to that table there in the corner where we can talk privately.”
Ken saw his in-laws when they walked into the room. He looked in Margie's direction wondering if she needed him at her side. He noticed she held up her hand and gave him a slight nod indicating that she could handle it herself.
The exchange didn't escape Sondra Shoemaker's attention. She suspected something was going on between the candidate and her opponent. Tonight the glances between the two of them were unmistakeable. As hard as they tried, they couldn't keep their eyes off one another. Sondra excused herself and walked out of the ballroom directly to the bar. “Give me a double bourbon, son,” she said as she sat on the bar stool next to Jerry Evans. “We were right about those two, Jerry, looks like we are going to need a couple of new candidates.”
Marjorie, your mother told me about your marriage. I'm sorry you felt you needed to hide your relationship from me, but I do understand. Before I meet my new son-in-law, I want you to know you and your mother are the most important things in my life. I know, at times it seemed my only interest lay in senate chambers. I don't regret my time as a United State Senator, but I do regret my attempt to force you to follow in my footsteps. I don't often admit that I have made a mistake, but in this instance, I did and I'm truly sorry for it.”
Daddy, I don't regret running for office. I would never have met Ken if I hadn't made that decision. I am sorry for the time and money spent on a campaign that should never have begun in the first place. My only hope is that you will accept Ken into our family. I truly love him, Daddy.”
I know I'm a stubborn old goat, my darling daughter, but I love you and I can see the happiness in your eyes when you mention your husband's name. Now, call the young man over so I can shake hands with my new son.”
Senator Holmes still caused a stir among the reporters even after his retirement. They were standing in the background but, because of their good instincts about a possible story were all watching the foursome in the corner. They noticed the senator rise from his chair and walk to the stage where the band was playing soft music.
Ladies and Gentlemen, my name is Clayton Holmes. Some of you may know me as the former senator representing the fine State of New York. I'm not here this evening to make a political speech although I would be happy to if you'd like.” The crowded laughed and cried no in unison. “As you may know, my daughter, Marjorie agreed to run for my vacant senate seat. A funny thing happened on the way to November. Margie met and fell in love with her opponent, Ken Grayson. I am pleased to announce that Margie and Ken were married this morning. May I present Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Grayson.”
Flashbulbs were exploding as the couple walked to the stage. The band began playing the wedding march, reporters were jotting notes and asking questions. The main question was about the campaign. Were one or both staying in the race? When did they stop being rivals and become lovers? What did Senator Holmes think of a Democrat joining the family? It was total chaos.
Ken walked to the microphone. “Please everyone, we will answer your questions very soon. We are all here to enjoy the grand opening of this beautiful hotel. We would like to thank our hostesses, Tracy Robinson and Holly Mackenzie for the gala event this evening. Since Margie and I are just beginning our honeymoon, we will depart for the evening.” He turned to his in-laws. “Come with us to our suite. We can finish our conversation there. You will simply be bombarded with reporter's questions if you stay here.”
Oh Ken, dear. We don't wish to intrude on your honeymoon,” said Betty. “I'm sure you two would like some privacy.”
Now that we are both out of work, we will have plenty of time to be alone. Besides, I'm starving. Those little doodads they were passing around down there didn't do a thing for my empty stomach. We will order room service. I'm sure Tracy and her staff will accommodate us.”
I think I'm going to like our new son-in-law, Betty. He's a take charge kind of guy. He even talked those reporters into backing off.”
He's a lot like you, Clayton. Now let's join Margie and Ken. I'm a little hungry myself.”

Strange Bedfellows

Chapter Seven
Strange Bedfellows

How's it going Tracy?” said Steve Burke as he and his photographer came through the back door of the hotel.
Hi Steve. If Holly and I make it through this weekend, we will be able to handle anything that comes along. I'm thinking back to the time everyone in Camden Corners discouraged us from taking on this project and wondering if maybe they may have all been right.”
The grand opening has been a little more overwhelming than you thought, huh? I'm sure you didn't expect so many VIPs to show up.”
You got that right. We were hoping one or two would accept our invitation, but as it turned out more said yes than no. Now we have to put up with the media too. Present company excluded, of course.
Holly is in the kitchen, I think the chef is worried his bonbons are too sweet. He insists we ordered the wrong brand of sugar. That fellow is an excellent cook, but a real pain in the bustle.”
A pain in the bustle? I think that is something my grandmother would say.”
Mine too,” laughed Tracy.
A harried Calvin Carmichael came rushing to where Tracy and Steve were standing. “Tracy, I think we have a problem,” he said, his voice at a higher pitch than usual.
I'm afraid I booked two guest into adjoining rooms. A gentleman called just last night and asked if it was possible to move him to a room with access to another guests suite. I was happy to accommodate him, but now I fear the gentleman was playing a trick on me and our guests.”
What's the problem, Calvin? There is a lock on each door. Each guest will have their privacy.”
You don't understand, Tracy. Steve, you know more about politics than I do. I was just informed that Mr. Ken Grayson and Miss Marjorie Holmes are running against each other for political office. Mr. Grayson's campaign manager and Miss Holmes campaign manager are in the foyer now in a shouting match with the desk clerk because of the proximity of the rooms. I'm so sorry Tracy, it is all my fault.”
Go ahead Tracy,” said Steve. “I'll go with you so the other reporters don't get out of hand.”
Tracy couldn't believe the commotion these two were causing when she entered the registration area. “What seems to be the problem here?” she tried to shout above the crowd noise.
Ms. Robinson, I personally booked a suite for Ms. Holmes requesting specifically that she have a private room. Now it seems her suite adjoins the Grayson suite. I cannot tolerate this lack of professionalism,” said a feisty little woman who Tracy assumed was the campaign manager for Marjorie Holmes.
Ma'am, I assure you, there are very secure locks on the inner doors of both suites. No one will be able to enter from either side unless both doors are open.”
Not good enough! I want a new suite for Ms. Holmes and I want it immediately.”
Ma'am, every room in the hotel is occupied. I'm afraid there is nothing we can do at this point. If you would prefer, we will arrange to have Ms. Holmes moved to a hotel in Greensboro. I'm sure they will be happy to accommodate her entourage and we will send a limo to Greensboro to transport her to the Gala tonight.”
Sondra, what seems to be the problem here?” Marjorie Holmes said as she walked through the doors.
Marjorie, this imbecilic facility has placed you in a room that adjoins Ken Grayson and they tell me they have no other suites available.”
Calm down, Sondra. We do not have a problem here. I'm sure there is a secure lock on the door connecting the rooms. How do you do ma'am. I'm Marjorie Holmes, I'm guessing you are one of the owners of this beautiful establishment.”
Welcome, Ms. Holmes, I'm Tracy Robinson. I am truly sorry for the confusion. Apparently a gentleman called and specifically asked for adjoining rooms. I'm sure it was a hoax and I do apologize for not verifying the request.”
That was not a hoax, it was a deliberate attempt to intimidate Ms. Holmes and I know just who the culprit was,” said Sondra as she glared at Jerry Evans, Ken Grayson's campaign manager.
Sondra, please! That is enough. Let's not bother these busy people any longer. I would like to get settled in my suite. It's been a busy morning. Thank you everyone. If you will please take my bags to the suite, I'll follow. Sondra, I'd like to be alone until cocktail hour. Would you please find something to occupy your time until then.”
Sondra didn't like being dismissed. She wondered if Marjorie Holmes had what it takes to run for office. Marjorie's father, Senator Clayton Holmes had been the perfect politician. He loved the game and it showed through his thirty years in the senate. He grudgingly gave up his seat after suffering a heart attack the previous year. Before he announced that he would not be running for for the office again, he received a promise from his only child, Marjorie that she would run in his place. Clayton and his wife, Betty, adored their daughter. Clayton had asked of Marjorie only two things in her entire life. The first was that she never marry a Democrat and the second was that she take over for him in the senate. She never commented on his first request and avoided all talk of politics with any young man she dated through high school and college. She was afraid if she turned down his second request, he would change his mind and run again. She didn't want to lose him to the stress of the job and agreed to be a candidate.
Ken Grayson caught the political bug during the Kennedy era when he was a junior in high school. Through the years, he enjoyed working behind the scenes. The moment the announcement was made that Senator Holmes would not be running for re-election, he was being pressured into becoming a candidate.
Jerry, I don't have any desire to run for any office. I've never even been on the school board. What makes you think I could be elected as senator?” he said to Jerry Evans, the state party chairman.
Ken, you are young and good looking. After thirty years of Clayton Holmes, the public is looking for someone different. The fact that you don't have a political background will be a plus for you. Besides, we don't have anyone else that would be able to beat the sentimental favorite, old Clayton's daughter.”
Clayton Holmes has a daughter? I hope she doesn't look like her father.” Ken grimaced at the thought of a female Clayton Holmes.
I've never seen her but I hope for her sake, she looks like her mother. What about it Ken? Will you at least think about it?”
Let me talk it over with a few people and I'll get back to you. If I do this thing, I want to keep it clean. You will promise me that, won't you? I never approved of mudslinging and I don't want to start now.”
A few days later, Ken reluctantly agreed to throw his hat in the ring.
Ken, where have you been? I just had another run in with Sondra Shoemaker. What a b..”
That's enough Jerry. The lady is just doing her job. What were you two arguing about this time?” said the always even tempered, Ken Grayson.
Oh, the hotel messed up. Booked you in an adjoining room with Marjorie Holmes. Sondra thinks I did it on purpose although I don't know why I would choose to have you so close to Ms. Holmes.”
Did they reassign our rooms?” Ken said with just a hint of panic.
No, there aren't any extras. They offered to move Marjorie and her staff to another facility in Greensboro but Marjorie said that wouldn't be necessary. That lady has class. I don't know why she picked Sondra as her spokesperson.”
That isn't any of our concern. I'm beat, I'd like to just relax in my suite until I have to make an appearance at the cocktail party. I'm sure you can find something to occupy yourself for a few hours. I noticed the bar is open.”
Don't mind if I do. Call me there if you need anything. See you later, Ken. Don't do anything I wouldn't do.” Jerry laughed at his own joke.
Holly stepped into Tracy's office. “Why did we ever decide to have this grand opening? I'm exhausted already and it's only Friday afternoon,” Holly said as she collapsed in the chair across from her friend. “I understand there was some commotion at the registration desk.”
Yes, I think we have it all straightened out. Marjorie Holmes is a pretty level headed person. That's more than I can say for her campaign manager. I think I'd better check with Ms. Holmes to see if everything is satisfactory. Why don't you hide out in here for a few minutes. You look like you could use a break.”
Tracy walked up the stairs to the second floor. She gently knocked on the door to the Rossi Suite. This was one of her personal favorites. It was decorated in the tradition of a Tuscany vineyard. Nick Rossi had planted the first of many grapevines over 70 years ago. Through the years, several wineries had been added and could be seen from the balcony where there was also a view of Lake Camden.
Ms. Holmes,” she called. “It's Tracy Robinson, I'm just checking to see if everything is satisfactory.”
Marjorie opened the door slightly. She was in her robe with her hair slightly mussed. Tracy was afraid she had disturbed her from a nap.
I'm so sorry if I disturbed your rest,” she said as she heard a male voice.
Darling, have you seen this view? It's breathtaking with the lake and all those vineyards in the distance.”
Tracy gasped as she looked up and saw Ken Grayson standing by the picture window with only a towel wrapped around him.
Her face turned bright red as did Marjorie's.
Ken turned as he realized they were not alone. “Marjorie, why don't you invite our guest in. I'll just go put on some clothes.
Ms. Holmes, I am so sorry. I didn't mean to intrude. Please forgive me. I will be on my way.”
Don't be silly Tracy. Please come in. By the way, my name is now Mrs. Grayson. Ken and I were married this morning by a good friend of his who knows how to keep a secret. Please call me Margie, I think under the circumstances we can suspend the formalities.”
Ken stepped out of the bedroom fully clothed. “I'm afraid your staff took the blame for the adjoining rooms. I was the one who called and requested this arrangement. I didn't want to have to sneak down the hall to visit my bride and this seemed the perfect solution.”
Tracy, I'm sure you are wondering how the two of us got together since we are on opposite sides in this election. The truth of the matter is that neither one of us has strong enough convictions to represent either parties. After this weekend, we will both be dropping out of our races. We are hoping to keep our marriage a secret until I have a chance to speak to my father and tell him of the marriage and of my decision. Daddy's heart is not strong, but I think he will understand when I tell him how happy Ken makes me.”
It's not my business, but why did you get into your respective races when you had feelings for each other.”
We didn't even know each other. We didn't meet face to face until we crossed paths in a hotel lobby in Rochester. We both had appearances at different functions. I had seen pictures of Margie and thought she was a beauty, but when I saw her in person, I thought I had died and gone to heaven.”
When I spotted Ken standing by a potted plant, I was so taken with his good looks, I walked right into a rack of postcards and they went flying all over the floor with me landing on my derriere right smack in the middle,” Margie said as she and Ken both laughed.
We have been together as often as possible ever since. We finally decided we couldn't live like this any longer. I'd intended to tell my father about Ken but he and mother took off for Bermuda a week ago. They are expected back Sunday afternoon. We just couldn't wait any longer to be husband and wife.”
That is the most romantic story I have ever heard. I can't believe you two have been able to keep your relationship a secret,” Tracy said.
I think Jerry suspects I have a female stashed somewhere. I'm sure he has no idea it's Margie. If he knew he would be having a panic attack.”
Sondra has no idea. I'm sure she would never understand how I could choose a mere man over being a United States senator, “ said Margie.
Meanwhile in a bungalow in Bermuda, Clayton Holmes is becoming suspicious. “Betty, why did you drag me here to the middle of an ocean when our daughter is running for office in New York?”
Clayton, dear. The election is months away. Have a sip of your lemonade and try not to worry about what is going on back home.”
Betty was lost in thought as she recalled her last conversation with her daughter. Our little girl is married. I couldn't be happier for her. She fell in love with a Democrat. Her father will have heart failure but I'm sure he will recover. I just don't know how to tell him. Maybe tomorrow. It will have to be soon since we will be leaving for New York in less than two days.

Vanessa's Return

Chapter Six
Vanessa's Return

Most of the staff of The Merryweather was standing on the marble stairway leading to the entry doors of the hotel. Eyes were popping as Cameron Swank made his way to the entrance with a smiling Vanessa Mackenzie at his side.
Vanessa saw Ben standing in the background before the limo came to a complete stop in front of the resort. Her heart pounded as she looked straight ahead not wanting to be caught staring in his direction. He looked wonderful. So handsome in his uniform. She winced as she remembered the way she had spoken to him the last time she saw him. He had shocked her when he made the decision all by himself that the two of them would remain in Camden Corners. She was still a little miffed when she thought about how impulsive he had been in renting the old Blackburn cottage. She loved that old place. As a child she would imagine herself living there when she grew up. In her imagination she was always married to a prince and had seven babies. Seven was the number of baby dolls she had on her bed at home. Her prince did come along but because of her stubborn streak, that was where the story ended. Vanessa hadn't been back home since the day she left. Her family and friends visited her on occasion. Her best friend, Candy Taylor kept her up to date on Ben and his female companions. Every time Candy came to town, Ben was dating a different girl.
It's a good thing we didn't stay together, Candy,” said Vanessa several times. “He seems to like to play the field and he probably would have cheated on me if I'd accepted his proposal.”
I'm not so sure about that Vanessa. Anyone in town who has been with him says he is very attentive but it never goes very far. I think it's because he's a one woman guy and you are the woman.”
If he felt that way, why didn't he stop me from moving here? If he really loved me he would never have let me get on that train.”
Maybe if you really loved him, you wouldn't have gotten on that train yourself. I know you aren't happy here. Why don't you come back home? You know it would thrill your family. Changing your mind wouldn't be the worst thing you could do. It's been almost four years, Van. Please think about coming home.”
I will be coming back for the opening of The Merryweather next month. How is it coming? I can't believe Tracy and my cousin have accomplished such an overwhelming task.”
Vanessa, I can't wait for you to see it. It is going to be a fabulous addition to our town. Camden Corners is coming up in the world. It's great you will be at the opening. Are you coming as Cameron Swank's escort? I can't believe that is part of your job description.”
I like being Cameron's escort. He is really a super nice guy. You know if it was discovered he was a homosexual, his career would be ruined. I hope someday attitudes change but in the meantime, I want to help in any way I can.”
I'm not knocking it. I just wish you had a real life. When was the last time you had a real date?”
Don't you remember that cameraman I had a date with?”
Yeah, two years ago and that lasted about a week before he got back with his wife. Vanessa, you haven't had a real date since you left Camden Corners and you know it.”
Should I tell Ben you are coming to town?”
No, maybe he won't see me. I'll be staying in Cameron's suite while I'm there and I'll be working except for the times I am making a public appearance with him. It's only for the weekend. What are the chances Ben will be at the big parties at the hotel?”
Candy was tempted to tell Ben about Vanessa coming home, but respected her wishes. Besides, she didn't know what his reaction would be to her so called job.
Ben was busy all afternoon and into the evening attempting to control the crowds. He had no idea there were as many dignitaries invited and people from surrounding towns were all anxious to get a look at them. His friend Jim and a few of the other fellows in town helped him set up barriers. Ben would be glad when the weekend was over. He thought he might like to talk with Vanessa but it looked like she had a new man in her life and probably didn't even remember him.
Vanessa, I've arranged for a rental car for you. Why don't you visit your family or some of your friends? I hate the thought of you being stuck in this hotel room all weekend,” said Cameron.
Thanks, Cam. You really shouldn't have done that. I won't be leaving these rooms unless I'm with you. My folks are going to meet me in my cousin, Holly's office later. I'd rather not be seen around town.”
You mean you'd rather Ben Murphy didn't see you. I have never known anyone so stubborn. You know you are still in love with the guy. Go tell him how you feel.”
I can't Cam, he's moved on with several other women and I'm not about to stand in line waiting for him to get around to me.”
Vanessa, what will I do with you? At least go down to the pool. It looks very secluded, you won't be bothered by cameras or exes.”
Cameron, stop worrying about me. I have work to do and I'll be just fine.”
Alright but I'm going to the bar by the pool. Tracy Robinson said it would be off limits to the public. Don't work too hard, dear.”
On his way down the stairs, he saw a good looking fellow in a sheriff's uniform. He was talking to Tracy Robinson. That has got to be Ben Murphy. He looks like someone Vanessa would be interested in.
Hello Mr. Swank, I hope your accommodations are satisfactory.”
I couldn't ask for anything more comfortable, Tracy. Please call me Cameron,” he said noticing the name Sheriff Benjamin Murphy on the other gentleman's nameplate.
Ben, do you mind if I call you that?”
Ben was surprised to be called by name. “No, sir. I don't mind at all. I enjoy your show very much and catch it every chance I get.”
Thanks, Ben. I enjoy playing the part. I'd like to buy you a drink so we may talk. I'm sure, unlike my character, you don't drink on the job but maybe you would enjoy a glass of soda while I indulge in a nice cooling beer.”
Ben was curious as to why this television star would be interested in talking with him. He wondered where Vanessa was and why she wasn't hanging on his arm now.
Ben, I'm sure you are curious as to why I singled you out. I hope you will keep what I'm telling you under your hat. You see, I am not interested in the opposite sex as most men are. It would ruin my career if the public found out my preference. The reason I'm telling you this is because there is a young lady upstairs who obliges her bosses at the production company and places her arm in mine when I appear in public. Her name is Vanessa Mackenzie. I think you know her.”
Yes, I do know Vanessa. It's been a long time since I've seen her.”
Yes, four years, I know that because Vanessa talks about you often. She still loves you, you know. I wonder how you feel about her. I'm asking because I don't want her to be hurt if you aren't interested.”
Mr. Swank...”
Please call me Cameron.”
Cameron, Vanessa left Camden Corners four years ago. She was furious with me then and she hasn't contacted me since. I made some decisions about our lives without discussing them with her first. I realize I was wrong to do that but she seems to be very happy with her life and I'm happy with mine just the way it it.”
Oh hogwash, Ben! You are just as stubborn as Vanessa and you are both foolish to go on like this. Vanessa won't even leave the hotel for fear of running into you. She spotted you when we drove onto the property today and she let out a wail that frightened the driver. I can see the pain in your eyes just mentioning her name. Here, take the key to my suite and go surprise the dickens out of our girl. I'd still like to be seen with her tonight but after the gala, we will have a little spat and I'll become involved with someone else by weeks' end. That's the kind of guy Cameron Swank is.”
I think Cameron Swank is a pretty great guy. I'm taking a chance that she won't throw me out on my ear. Thanks Cameron.”
Ben took the back stairs two at a time. After four years, he found he couldn't wait to come face to face with Vanessa.
He gingerly knocked on the door and then stuck the key in the lock and turned it.
Hi Cam, that didn't take long. How was the beer?”
The root beer was very good. I think it was Dad's. My favorite.”
Vanessa turned with a start. She recognized Ben's voice. “How did you get in here, Ben?”
Your friend Cameron says you still love me. That works out quite well because I never stopped loving you, Vanessa. I'm sorry I was presumptuous four years ago when I planned out our lives without even consulting you. I'll give up my job and my home and move to New York if you will still have me. Where I live and work are of little importance without you in my life.”
Oh Ben, I have been a silly fool. I was sorry I moved to New York a week after I left Camden Corners. I have missed you and my family and friends for all this time. I was afraid to come back to town because I couldn't bear to see you strolling around town with someone else. I love you Ben. I always have and I always will.”
We have wasted so much time. I hate to wait even two more days but you are Cameron's for the weekend. If it weren't for him I wouldn't be holding you in my arms this very moment. I think we should name our first born after him. What do you think?”
I don't think our son would like to be called Sidney, do you? That's Cameron's real name, Sidney Plank.”
Maybe we will just send pictures. Vanessa, let's get married on Monday. We can keep it quiet until Cameron finds a new escort.”
Any thing you decide will be fine with me. I just like to be asked first.”
O.K. Will you marry me on Monday?
Only if we can start the honeymoon this afternoon. We have until 7:00 tonight. Then I'll have to get ready for my date.
