Feels Like Home

Feels Like Home

Jessie, can you believe our good fortune? Miss Nettie is our mother and Mr. Oscar is our father. Look at this beautiful room. I've never seen such sheer curtains before in all my life. Do you think we are rich?” Hattie said as she unpacked the few items she called her own.
I don't know if we are rich but isn't this the softest bed you have ever felt. I can't believe when we woke up this morning we were living at the villa and now we are here in a whole new town with brand new parents.”
Nettie knocked on the door. “Girls, are you hungry? Miss Trudy has cooked up a scrumptious meal for us this evening. Your brothers will be here to meet you very soon.”
Hattie threw the door open. “Miss Nettie, this room is the most beautiful room I have ever seen. I always imagined our mama in a big fluffy bed like this. Grandmother says she was very sick and had to stay in bed after we were born.”
Oh my darling child. I'm sure she had a bed just like yours and two beautiful babies to look at while you slept.”
Grandmother says we looked like little prunes when we were born. The doctor said we wouldn't live through the night because we were too small. Grandmother fed us with a little eye dropper and after a few days she said we began squalling all the time. Grandmother didn't like doctors very much. She said they were all quacks. For the longest time I thought the ducks in the pond in the park were doctors.”
The three of them giggled and walked out of the room.
Richard and Robert had arrived with Lily and Emma and the babies. Matthew and Catherine were seven months old and full of energy. They giggled when they saw their grandma and grandpa.
Jessica is going to be learning to refinish furniture? She and Josie Blackburn are taking lessons from Dudley Hanover. Do you mind the long trip back to Greensboro, Jessie?” asked Oscar.
Oh no, Mr. Oscar. I will be dreaming about learning how to make something old pretty again. That's what Mr. Hanover tells us he will teach us.”
Tell your brothers how you got yourself into Mr. Hanover's class, Jessica.”
Oh dear, I'm afraid I was deceitful. I dressed up in boys clothes and I hid my hair under a cap. I fooled Mr. Hanover but I didn't fool Miss Evelyn.”
Richard and Robert laughed. “Nobody ever fooled Miss Evelyn, Jessie. She knew every trick any child could think up.” said Robert.
Did you come from the villa too?”
No, honey. Miss Evelyn was the principal of Camden Corners Grammar School before she moved to Greensboro to be headmistress of the villa.”
Miss Evelyn is very nice, I like her a lot.” said Hattie.
I think Mr. Hanover likes her too.” Oscar said with a chuckle.
Mr. Hanover is a wonderful man. I think it's terrific that he and Evelyn are stepping out.” said Emma. She knew Mr. Hanover through her grandfather, Amos.
Back in Greensboro, Dudley Hanover was nervously waiting for Evelyn Keys to finish giving instructions to her assistant.
I'm sorry, Mr. Hanover. This is the first time I have left the villa for the evening since I came here last year. I'm afraid I'm being a bit overly cautious. I'm sure they will get along just fine without me.”
Take your time, Mrs. Keys, I understand.”
I suppose if we are out on an informal occasion, we should drop the Mr. and Mrs. Please call me Evelyn and may I call you Dudley?”
I would like that Evelyn. I'd like us to be honest with each other. I am not a man who has courted very many women. I'm afraid I am very nervous this evening.”
I'm nervous too, Dudley. I haven't been alone with a man since my husband died over twenty years ago. Maybe together we can just relax and enjoy a nice evening as friends.”
That sounds delightful.”
How did your interest in furniture refinishing begin, Dudley?”
I have always had an interest in history and feel the furniture of our ancestors reveal much about the way they lived. Amos Patterson owned the old Patterson's General Store here in Greensboro. He was a collector who knew everything there was to know about fine old furniture.”
Emma Crowley's grandfather. I never met him but have heard Nettie and Ethel Fulbright speak of him often.”
Amos taught me everything I know. We lost a treasure when that man died. I know Emma and I'm sure she is carrying on Amos' legacy. I'm a tax attorney by trade which is quite the contrast to refurnishing furniture. Enough about me, what brought you to Greensboro and the villa?”
As you know, my husband passed away many years ago. Much to my regret, we never had children of our own. It seemed only natural that I continue my teaching. The principal of the school became ill and I filled in for him as there was no one else to do the job. I'm sure if a man had been available, I would never have been considered. Unfortunately, the principal didn't recover and I just kept filling in for him. After several years of being a temporary principal, they made it official. I didn't care for their methods, but I loved the children so much I just went along with it. When Harvey Wilson suggested I might like to be in charge of the villa, I jumped at the chance. Harvey has given me full control over the operation. I will be forever grateful for his faith in me.”
What do you think of our town? It isn't as friendly as Camden Corners but we try to make newcomers feel welcome.”
It seems friendly enough to me. It is much larger than Camden Corners and that makes a difference. To be honest, I don't leave the villa grounds very often. That's why this is such a nice treat for me.”
Dudley found Evelyn to be an easy person to be around. He hated for the evening to end. He walked her to the front door of the villa. He wanted to give her a kiss on the cheek but was afraid they would be spotted by one of the children.
Evelyn sensed his reluctance. “Dudley would you like to come into my suite for a glass of sherry?”
Would that be acceptable, Evelyn? I wouldn't want to cause any problems for you.”
I am allowed guests, Dudley. This is my home, after all.”
Dudley was impressed with Evelyn's living quarters. “Why this is just like an apartment. You have your own parlor and kitchen. You have it decorated beautifully. It looks like you.”
I'll take that as a compliment,” Evelyn laughed.
It was meant that way. Evelyn, I am not a man of the world by any means but I do find you very attractive. I enjoyed being your friend this evening but I would like to be much more than that. Do you think we could begin a courtship?”
I think we already have,” said Evelyn as she handed Dudley a glass of sherry. Her eyes sparkled as she stood on the tips of her toes and kissed the shy Dudley Hanover directly on the lips. “Dudley, we are not adolescents who have all the time in the world. As you can see, there is plenty of room here for two. Now let's drink our sherry and talk about the future.”
You get right to the point, don't you Evelyn?”
I know what I want and I'm willing to ask for it. I hope you like children, Dudley.”
I'm crazy about them and I'm crazy about you.” Dudley set his glass down and took Evelyn in his arms.
Oh Dudley!” she said as he covered her mouth with kisses.
In Camden Corners, the Crowleys were calling it a night. Nettie read the twins a story and tucked them in. She joined Oscar in the room they shared.
I wonder how Evelyn and Dudley are getting along. Wouldn't it be nice if they became a couple?”
If I know Dudley, he is still calling his date Miss Evelyn. He has always been timid around women.”
I don't know why, he is certainly a handsome fellow with impeccable manners. Any woman would be proud to have him on her arm.”
His mother was a dear lady but very dependent on Dudley. From what I have been told, even in school she would make him come home early from outings with his friends. I think eventually he stopped going out socially. He is the best tax attorney in the state but that didn't do much for his social standings. The work he does with the furniture doesn't exactly require any social contact either. Now he has chosen being the proprietor of a history museum. He needs a woman who will bring him out of his shell. If anyone can do that it will be Mrs. Evelyn Keys.”
Evelyn is such a lovely woman. As much as she loves those children, I'm sure she has enjoyed spending some time with a gentleman. Do you think he will kiss her goodnight, Oscar?”
I don't think he will work up the nerve to shake her hand. I'd say it will be early December before he gets around to that first kiss.”
The twins seemed to have a good time tonight. I was afraid they might have been overwhelmed by all the commotion but they seemed to fit right in.”
They are very sweet girls, aren't they? I wonder what the story is with the parents. It sounds as though their mother died after giving birth to them. I wonder where the father is.”
I could ask a few questions in Greensboro if you really want to know,” said Oscar.
I don't know. We might be sorry to learn the answer. What do you think Oscar?”
Maybe I'll take a ride with Josie and Jessica tomorrow. I think I'll ask Evelyn her opinion. I will also ask about the dinner date tonight.”
Are you sure that isn't the main reason you want to see Evelyn. I wonder if Hattie would like to ride along too. We could always do some shopping while Jessica is in class. The girls do need some new dresses and Greensboro has so much more of a selection than Camden Corners.”
It's settled then. We will all leave for Greensboro in the morning.”
Trudy was busy making breakfast for the travelers. “Just can't wait to hear all about Miss Evelyn's engagement last evening, is that it Miss Nettie?”
Trudy, you know me so well it frightens me. We are also going to do some shopping. Jessica has agreed to let Hattie pick out some dresses for her. Is there anything you need in Greensboro, Trudy?”
No ma'am. Anything I can't find right here in Camden Corners I don't need. Why you want to spend your hard earned money in the big city is beyond me.”
Trudy, someday I am going to insist you visit Greensboro. It is a very nice town. Many of the people who live in Camden Corners are from Greensboro.”
If it's so great why didn't they stay there. No, if you ask me, that place is sin city and I don't want any part of it.”
Oscar walked in. “Trudy are you going on about the evils of the big city again? You really need to get out more.”
Trudy stomped off to her room. Nobody knew why Trudy, an otherwise reasonable woman, was so against Greensboro. Oscar suspected an old beau may have left Trudy and Camden Corners to explore the big city and was never to return again.
Are we ready to go? Josie will be waiting for us. Won't she be surprised when she sees the whole family?”
The whole family! Doesn't that sound nice Hattie?”
It certainly does, Jessica.” Hattie replied as she squeezed Nettie's hand.

The Lesson

The Lesson

I would be happy to meet Mr. Hanover. Our paths just don't seem to cross. I have wanted to tell him personally what a fine thing he is doing for the children. Not only does he guide them in the correct way to bring a piece of furniture to life again, his knowledge of history is vast. I'll just finish up some of this paperwork while you say hello to the children.”
Nettie and Oscar strolled through the villa greeting the children as they played. They knew many of them through previous visits. There were always new faces which was both happy and sad. Happy that these children had found a place where people really cared about them and sad because there weren't enough facilities like this.
Hi Miss Nettie.”
Hello Mr. Oscar.” The children all shouted at them on their walk.
Are you reading us a story today Miss Nettie?”
Maybe later this afternoon, dear.”
Where are Leah and Alfie?”
They are back with their mama and papa now. Isn't that wonderful?”
Oh yes. That is so wonderful,” said a dark haired girl of around fourteen.
Your name is Hattie, isn't that right?”
Yes ma'am. I'm Hattie and my sister is Jessie. She isn't here right now. I have to be going, Miss Nettie. I hope I see you later.” Hattie ran off.
Wasn't that strange, Oscar? Hattie seemed almost afraid of us. I wonder what she and her sister are up to?”
You can always spot a child who is about to get into mischief. You have a gift, Nettie.” Oscar laughed.
Yes, I think any teacher has a sixth sense about a child who is about to get into trouble. I like Hattie and Jessie. I'd guess they are close to 15 years old. I remember Evelyn saying they lived with a grandmother and when she died a year ago, there was nobody to take them in. They are twins who aren't identical but look enough alike to fool people. It makes me wonder where Jessie is at the moment.”
There you two are. Shall we take my automobile? Oscar, when are you going to break down and buy yourself a horseless carriage?”
Nothing wrong with my trusty horses. I see way too many people stopped on the road with those contraptions spitting and sputtering. Give me a couple of fine horses and a shiny carriage, and there's no stopping me.”
They arrived at the Green Hill Inn at precisely 12:30. Dudley was waiting for them in the vestibule. “Hello everyone. Mrs. Keys, I'm Dudley Hanover. It is a pleasure to meet you.” Evelyn Keys was even prettier in person. Dudley felt the color rise in his cheeks.
Mr. Hanover, the pleasure is mine. I have been remiss in thanking you for all you have done for the children.”
They are the ones who bring me joy. Those boys take such pride in their work and are open to learning all I have stored in this old head of mine.”
Evelyn's life had been filled with children since her husband passed away many years ago. It never occurred to her to become involved with another man. She found herself wondering what it would be like to have Dudley Hanover waiting for her at the end of a long day.
Would you like to see the museum after lunch?”
I certainly would,” said Oscar. “I had a glimpse of some of those enormous pieces of furniture the Clarke's had delivered. Poor Philip, he hadn't realized how big they all were until he tried to fit them in his rather small house.”
His loss was certainly the museum's gain. The boys are working on the dining table now. We have four boys here today. My assistant, Mr. Harper, is overseeing them but they don't need any supervision. I think you will be amazed at how well they are doing.”
The foursome walked into the massive room. “Hello fellows, come say hello to Mr. and Mrs. Crowley.”
Three of the boys stood up and politely shook hands with the Crowleys. Evelyn was surprised the one boy didn't follow them. “Who is that over there? Ross, go see what is keeping that young man.”
I think he's working on a very delicate corner, Miss Evelyn. Maybe we should let him be.”
Alright. What's up? Who are you? Come over here right this minute.”
A familiar face peered out from behind the table. “Take your hat off, lad.”
The hat came off and long hair flowed from beneath.
Jessica Farmer? Is that you? What in heaven's name are you doing here young lady?”
I'm sorry Miss Evelyn. I so wanted to learn how to make the furniture pretty again. Mr. Dudley knows so much about these beautiful things. I didn't mean any harm.”
Jessie, you know this class is for boys only. Did Hattie help you with your deception?”
I made her help me, Miss Evelyn. Don't punish her, please.”
I'm not going to punish anyone, dear. You know you can't be here. Especially alone with all these boys. Now take off those overalls and give them back to Mr. Hanover.”
Golly, Miss Evelyn. Jessie is really a good worker. We fellows don't mind that she is with us. Please let her stay.”
Ross, I'd love to let her stay but there are rules and I must follow all of the rules, not just the ones I like. I wish it could be different.”
I'm so very sorry, Miss Evelyn. I had no idea Jess was a girl.”
How would you know when she is dressed like a ruffian. The boys knew and they went along with the deception. We are the ones who owe you an apology,” Evelyn said.
Boys, you get back to work and Jessica, change your clothes and meet us outside.” Evelyn snickered as she turned her back. “I'm sorry Dudley, those children do stick together.”
You aren't angry with them or me then?”
No, of course not. I think it's wonderful that Jessie wants to learn a trade. I wish I didn't have to be the one to discourage her. As headmistress of the villa, I can't allow a young lady to be in the presence of only males. The state, or the people in charge, think females should be satisfied learning to sew and knit and take care of household chores. Heaven forbid we would like to learn skills to build a house or even repair a table leg. I'm sorry, I don't mean to let my frustration show.”
Don't be silly, I like a feisty woman. In fact, Miss Evelyn, I like you very much. Would you care to have dinner with me this evening? Maybe we will be able to figure out a way Jessie can continue her work with me.”
Are you thinking what I'm thinking Oscar?”
If you are thinking about Josie Blackburn then we are on the same wavelength, my dear.”
Evelyn spoke up. “Josie Blackburn. She would be perfect for the job.” She explained to Dudley. “Josie bought a cottage by the lake. She was in the process of remodeling it when she met and married Reggie Blackburn. He has helped her along the way but she had so much of it done before that. I wonder if she would be interested in sitting in on some of your lessons, Dudley? She could act as guardian to Jessica.”
I will call her as soon as I get back to my office. Dudley, I will fill you in at dinner tonight. If we are still on?”
That will be fine, I'll stop by the villa at 6:30 if that isn't too early. Oscar and Nettie, would you like to join us?”
We will leave you two lovebirds on your own this evening,” Oscar said as Nettie told him to stop his teasing. “We are dining with the Prestons and Cooper children.”
That's right,” said Nettie, “Gladys asked that you join us. I'll tell her you are otherwise engaged for the evening. I did promise the children a story or two. Dudley, it has been a pleasure. I hope Evelyn and Josie are able to work something out.”
Jessica came out of the back room. Her hair was brushed and she was wearing a dress. She handed Dudley the overalls. “I'm very sorry, Mr. Hanover. I won't sneak in here with the boys again.” The disappointment on her face tore at Dudley's heartstrings.
Jessica, you are a very talented young lady. I hope our paths will cross again in the very near future.”
Dudley shook Evelyn's hand. Ross and his friends snickered. They were tempted to voice their observation about a budding romance but decided they'd better not press their luck with Miss Evelyn.
Nettie was reading to the younger children. Oscar was playing catch with some of the boys on the playground. Evelyn came out of her office. “Josie has said she would love to accompany Jessica to Mr. Hanover's. She is excited at the prospect of learning to renovate furniture. It seems Jonas Fulbright has been helping her with just that. She is going to ask if Jonas can tag along too. She is sure he will want to. Come with me when you are finished here, Nettie. I can't wait to share the news with Jessica.”
Nettie found it difficult to concentrate on the children's story. Her mind was swirling. She was happy when she saw Oscar walk through the doors. Evelyn was telling him about Josie. He smiled his biggest smile and walked over to his wife.
That's all for now children. Why don't you run outside and play until suppertime.”
Oscar are we thinking the same thing again?”
I think so dear, it's time we had a couple of teenage girls in our home.”
How much easier it would be if Josie had a riding companion on her way to Greensboro a couple of times a week for the lessons. It would be such a long ride by herself with baby Jonathan to care for. Oscar, are you sure? Do you think Jessica and Hattie would want to live in our home?”
Evelyn, what do you think?”
You two have just made this day perfect. I thought the twins would be a happy addition to your family even before you arrived this morning. I'll go get them so we can all share the good news.”
Evelyn walked into the room Jessie and Hattie shared with two other girls. “Come with me ladies, Mr. & Mrs. Crowley would like to speak with you.”
Hattie held her sister's hand as she whispered, “I hope Miss Nettie isn't so mad at us that we have to leave here. Jessie, do you think we are on our way to the orphanage?”
I won't let them take you there Hattie. It was all my fault. I should never have pretended to be a boy.”
Nettie could see the girls were shaking as they entered Miss Evelyn's office. “What is wrong, girls? We just wanted to talk to you.”
Miss Nettie, please don't send Hattie to the orphanage. She doesn't deserve to be punished for what I did.”
If Jessica goes, then I will go too. She will be lonely without me there.”
What is all this talk about an orphanage?” said Miss Evelyn. “Mr. & Mrs. Crowley want to adopt you and take you home to Camden Corners with them.”
You want to adopt both of us? Not just Hattie?” cried Jessica.
We want you both. We wouldn't dream of separating you. I hope you will like our home. Some of your friends from the villa are living with other families in town. We also have a surprise for you Jessie.” Nettie told her about the plan for her to continue her lessons with Mr. Hanover.
Both girls threw their arms around Nettie and Oscar. “This is the happiest day of our whole lives,” exclaimed Hattie as she brushed away her tears.

Part of the Family

Part of the Family

Helene and Neville Merryweather were on their way home to Camden Corners. They had mentioned the possibility of adopting children from the villa but hadn't planned on bringing two young girls to their home this soon.
James, Melinda and Melissa were busy helping the housekeeper put fresh linens on the beds in the spare room and airing out and dusting the seldom used room.
I think the girls will like this room Melinda,” Melissa said “It's a very cheerful. I like the flowered wallpaper in here. I wonder why I didn't chose it for my own?”
Because you didn't want the sun to wake you up in the mornings. Won't it be fun to have two more sisters? I think James was hoping Father and Helene would bring home a boy. Not that he doesn't like being our big brother.”
I wonder what they will be like. Helene said we would love the Marissa, she didn't say too much about Marvella.”
Wouldn't it be terrible to not have any family at all? We will have to try very hard to make them both feel welcome.”
I think I have beaten every last speck of dust out of this old rug,” James said as he hauled it into the room. It does look very nice in here. I'm glad you opened the curtains wide. I think our new sisters will like it.”
I hope they like us too,” said Melissa. “Helene said this was just a visit so we could all get to know each other.”
I think they'll like you just fine, squirt. I do worry about Melinda though. She can be such a problem child.”
Oh stop it James.” Melinda spoke up. “You know we have brought nothing but sunshine into your dull and boring life. Now, help me move this bed just a little closer to the wall.”
James laughed. Melinda was right. He loved having sisters to tease. He was happy he sought out his birth father all those months ago. It was hard to believe they were all sharing the same house together now.
On the train, Helene was helping Marvella with her reading. She struggled over the larger words but for a girl who had not attended school regularly she did very well. Marvella liked it best when Helene read the story to her. Marissa was content to look at the pictures in her new book. Margaret read it three times to her and Neville read it two more. Marissa was able to recite the story without reading the words.
As the train pulled into the station in Camden Corners. Marvella was changing her mind. We should have stayed in the villa. I don't want another family. They won't like me. All negative thoughts were going through her mind. Marissa was on her knees looking out the window. “Is that them?” she squealed when she saw a tall young man with two younger girls? “Are they my new brother and sisters?”
Marissa was giggling with excitement. Marvella was practicing her best scowl. If they don't like me I won't like them either she thought to herself.
They all stepped off the train. Helene and Neville hugged their children and then introduced Marissa and Marvella.
I like our new family, don't you Marvella?” Marissa said on the way to the Merryweather home.
They are alright,” Marvella hid her face as best she could.
Marvella, are you reading Little Women? That is my favorite book.” said Melissa “Nobody reads it out loud like Helene. You would think you were sitting right in the March living room.”
That's what Marvella said, didn't you Marvella?” Marissa said hoping her sister would put a smile on her face.
It's alright,” was all Marvella said.
They were finally home. The Merryweather girls showed the newcomers their room. They weren't surprised when Marissa jumped for joy when she saw her big bed. James had bought a stuffed animal for each of the girls and put them on their beds. Marissa hugged the animal and hugged everyone in the room. Marvella looked around and said nothing.
Helene said, “Let's go downstairs to see what we can find for lunch. Melissa would you stay here and help Marvella unpack her things. Marissa, you can help set the table.”
When Melissa and Marvella were alone, Marvella said, “How come you call your mother Helene?”
Helene isn't my real mother. She and Father were married just a few months ago. Our real mother died last year.”
Is James your real brother?”
It's complicated. James is our half brother. You see Father and Helene knew each other a long time ago. They were in love but they couldn't be together because our grandfather didn't approve of Helene. James was born because Father and Helene loved each other so very much. Father didn't know about James until last year. Now we are all a big family and we all love each other.”
Does Miss Helene love you and Melinda even though she isn't your real mother?”
Oh yes, Helene loves us very much. Our real mother didn't pay too much attention to us but Helene does. She cares about what we think and how we feel. She knows when we are sad or unhappy and she holds our hand and lets us talk to her. Our mother never liked having us around. We still loved her but she didn't seem like she loved us back. Helene says people love differently and our mother did love us in her own special way.”
My mother didn't like having Marissa and me around either. She didn't want Marissa to be born. I don't think she wanted me to be born either but she never said that.”
I expect your mother did love you but in her own special way like Helene says.”
Do you really think so Melissa?”
Yes, I really think so. Shall we hang your clothes in the wardrobe and go down to see what's for lunch?”
Helene thought Marvella's step was just a little lighter. She had a feeling she and Melissa would get along well. They were close to the same age.
After lunch we'll take a tour of the town. I think you ladies will like looking at all the pretty Christmas decorations in Pringles. We will go to the toy store and maybe stop for some candy at the candy shop. I'm sure we will meet a lot of the people who live here since it's such a beautiful fall day.”
Maybe I could stop by the newspaper office and see if Ella is ready to leave for the day,” said James.
Ella is James' sweetheart. She writes for the newspaper,” Melissa explained.
May I be your sweetheart too James?” Marissa said
You already are Marissa and I'm sure you will be Ella's sweetheart too.”
Marvella liked James. He was tall and handsome and seemed so very nice to his sisters. She liked the whole family but she didn't want to be hurt again so she hid that fact from them. She and Marissa did just fine without a family. They said we were here for a visit. That's like all the houses we stayed in after Mama died. They kept us for a little while and then they sent us on to somebody else.
Ella joined the group. Marvella could tell everybody liked her too. “I'm meeting Vicar Will and the boys at the lake. They are fishing now and I promised if they didn't smell too fishy, we would get ice cream. How about it, anyone want to join us at the drugstore?”
Butch and Billy entertained everyone with their fish tales. Marvella couldn't help but laugh just a little bit.
They walked along the beach after the ice cream. “Are Miss Helene and Mr. Neville adopting you and Marissa?” Billy said.
No, we are just here for a visit. I'm sure they will send us back to the villa. I think they would like Marissa to stay with them because she is so cute and happy. I won't let them take her away from me though.”
Why would they take her away from you? I'm sure they like you too. Before Ma and Pa adopted Butch and me, I was grouchy too. Being part of a family makes you feel happy inside and when that happens you will begin to smile just like me.” Billy showed off his teeth with a big smile.
I didn't know you were adopted. Is Ella your sister and is Butch your brother?”
Ella is my sister. Our mama died when I was just a baby. Ella didn't know where I was. Butch started to follow me around one day when I was in New York City and he keeps following me. He never had a mama until Mama Kate. Now we are all a family and we have a new baby sister. Her name is Hillary.”
Do you like being adopted?”
Are you kidding? It's the greatest thing ever. We even have a great grandma and great grandpa. There are a lot of kids around here that are adopted. You'll meet them all soon. I know you're scared the Merryweathers will send you away but I know they won't do that. Miss Helene works in the library. She helps me with my reading when I get stuck on something and she never makes me feel stupid. You are lucky she is going to be your new ma.”
My new ma. I wish that could be true,” thought Marvella.
The day was passing swiftly. Marissa was so tired from all the activity she could barely make it through supper. Neville carried her to her new bed. She held onto her stuffed animal as though she was afraid to let it go.
Marvella climbed into her own bed. She had never slept on anything so soft and comfortable. She didn't remember a better day in all her thirteen years. She began to cry softly. She never cried before. At least ever that she could remember. The tears wouldn't stop. She heard the door open and Miss Helene sat down and put her hand on her back. “Go ahead and cry my darling girl, you have held the tears in long enough. Now you have a family to care for you and share your burdens. I hope you will stay here and join our family. We love you and your sister very much.”
Nobody had ever told Marvella that she was loved before. “Are you sure Miss Helene, are you sure you want me too and not just Marissa? I promise not to be grouchy, like Billy says.”
You just promise to be yourself. If you feel grouchy then that's what you should be. Sometimes I feel grouchy too, but that doesn't mean those who love me make me go away.”
Marvella fell asleep with her own stuffed animal tucked inside her arm.
The sun beamed through the window the next morning waking Marissa up. “Marvella, get up, Miss Helene is making cinnamon muffins, I can smell them baking.”
Marvella and Marissa walked into the kitchen hand in hand. “Good morning ladies” said Helene. I thought the smell of these muffins might wake all the sleepy heads up. Sit down and have some oatmeal. Mrs. Turner added raisins to it as a special treat. Everyone else should be down shortly. We have things to talk about when they get here.”
Marvella's face fell. Was she dreaming last night when Miss Helene came into her room? Are they going to tell her she has to go back to the villa, but they want to keep Marissa with them? Marvella's chin started to quiver as everyone walked through the kitchen door.
What's wrong Marvella? We were hoping you would be happy to stay here with us?” said Melinda.
I wanted everyone to be here when we made it official. Neville, would you like to ask the girls a question?” said Helene
Miss Marvella and Miss Marissa, Miss Helene and I wanted to give you some time to adjust to living here in Camden Corners with us before we asked you to become real members of the Merryweather family. We found that we love you both so much we can't wait another day. We would like to adopt you and be your mother, father, sister and brother. I also have a sister who you will meet today. Her name is Miss Millie and she will make a wonderful aunt to you. Would you honor us by becoming our daughters forever and always?”
Marvella, we can stay here forever, did you hear that? We have a mama and papa. Why are you crying Marvella?”
I'm crying because I can't keep the smile off my face you silly thing. I'm so happy.”
The only person in the room that wasn't crying was Marissa. Even Neville and James had to wipe a tear from their eye.
I wonder if Oscar and Nettie decided about welcoming anyone into their home? I know Oscar was concerned about his age. Nettie thinks he's younger than most men half his age and I tend to agree with her. I expect they will be home later today. It has been quite an eventful week,” said Neville.
Yes it has Neville, and a wonderful week discounting your near death experience. You must promise me you will never do anything so foolish again.”
I promise dear. Now sit down and relax, you are a mother of five now. It's been a long wait to be together but I have never been happier.” Neville kissed her and heard some giggling. His son and four daughters were peeking in the window at them. All smiling, all happy and all together.

Open Hearts

Open Hearts

Neville Merryweather! What were you thinking? You not only put yourself in danger, you put our friends in danger too. Do you know they just hauled a dead body through the lobby of the hotel?” Helene shouted.
It wasn't my body, dear. I'm very much alive.” Neville said
Oscar I've asked the bellman to bring some extra glasses to our room. Shall we move the party there? I believe the sight of all this blood is upsetting Helene,” Nettie said
Good idea, I'm afraid we will be staying the night. The sheriff thought the judge may have a few questions for us. We didn't do anything illegal, mind you.”
The fact remains that a man is dead and you all were a party to it. Top that off with gambling and I can see why the judge would have questions.”
Harvey is it true? Is Roger Blake really dead?”
I'm afraid so, my dear. He was a real piece of work and not a very adept cheater. I wish you could have seen him hide that card in his shirt sleeve. The cheap bourbon he was drinking like water was what did him in.”
I'm sorry a man is dead but I'm not sorry his children are now safe from him. We have gotten to know some of the children in the villa. Harvey, I'm so happy you turned your home over to Evelyn. She is a wonderful headmistress and the children all have a chance at a good life now.”
There are a couple of young girls I'd like you to meet Neville. That is if you think you can stay out of trouble. I'll not invite any children into our home if their father continues to play cops and robbers,” said Helene.
You'll be glad to know I have hung up my spy glasses and handcuffs. I might even go back to selling insurance. I never thought of those two characters having guns they were more than ready to use. Now tell me about the girls. How come no boys? Don't you think I'm capable of throwing a ball to a young lad?” said Neville.
Maybe next time around. These girls are sisters and you know the rule about separating siblings. I think we will have our hands full with Marvella, the older one.”
When do I get to meet this challenging young lady. Remember I put up with Prudence for almost 20 years. I think I can handle an adolescent with an attitude.”
Well, that's good because she does have an attitude. Her little sister Marissa is a gem though. I fell in love with her right away.”
After dinner in Oscar and Nettie's suite, everyone said goodnight. It was going to be a long day tomorrow.
The judge reprimanded the men for their part in the scheme to put Roger Blake away. “Oscar, I've known you for many years. I find it difficult to believe you were involved in this whole thing. You know it was entrapment and the case would have been thrown out of court. I could cite you for illegal gambling but I would have to investigate our sheriff's part in that also. Neville, I understand your desire to save those children from their father. I wish there were more people like you who involved themselves with innocent lives. However, a man is dead. I'm sure you had no intention of that outcome but you may want to think about consequences the next time you decide to instigate one of your schemes.
No charges have been filed and I see no reason to keep you here. You are all excused. Next case.”
There was never any need to worry men. If the judge had cited us, I know of a couple of good attorneys we could have called.”
How are the boys, Oscar?”
They are doing well. They are both adjusting to being new fathers. They have their own lives now and so does Polly. I sure miss having little Faith around all day. I know Nettie is looking over the children at the villa. I wonder if they will mind having an old goat like me in their lives. We have plenty of room for a few of them. Shall we be on our way?”
I'm glad that's over Oscar. I was afraid you would be at least one night in the pokey if only to teach you fellows a lesson.” said Nettie.
And let you belles be on your own all evening long. No way. If you're going to kick up your heels we want to be with you. Right, fellas?”
Don't know how I'd be at kicking up my heels but it would be fun to watch the ladies,” said Harvey.
Marissa ran to Helene when she saw her walk through the door. “Miss Helene, I'm glad you came back. Are you going to read us another story? Marvella thinks you have a nice voice but she didn't want me to tell you that.”
Marissa, I'm happy to see you this morning. I'd like you to meet my husband Mr. Neville.”
Marissa, I'm very pleased to meet you. Miss Helene has told me all about you and your sister.”
Yeah, I'll bet she talked about me,” came the surly voice of Marvella. “Probably told you what a charmer I am. I'm telling you now, nobody is taking my sister away from me so if you think you're going to adopt her you can just forget it.”
Hello Marvella. We discussed that yesterday and you know we have no intention of separating the two of you. I have come to read a story to the children. You may stay if you wish or go sulk in your room. It's your decision.”
I'll stay. That way I can make sure you don't run off with Marissa.”
Neville understood exactly what Helene meant. Marissa was an angel that you just wanted to hold in your arms and protect from all the evil out in the world. Marvella was going to fight every step of the way. He could see a fear in her eyes. She was afraid to trust anyone. She expected people not to like her and set out to prove it by being unlikeable. He suspected under that hard exterior, she was just a little girl looking for affection.
Some of the older girls heard Helene reading and gathered around to listen. After two stories the younger children were getting restless. Peggy took them off to play in another room. Helene brought out a larger book.
This is a story I think some of you older children will like.” She opened Little Women and began reading. Marissa stayed by her side and listened intently.
Helene read until the bell chimed for lunch. “Miss Helene, will you read more of the story after lunch?” one of the girls asked.
Maybe you girls would like to take turns reading. The book is so long I wouldn't be able to finish it while I'm visiting today anyway.”
Nobody here can read a story like you do. You make it seem like we are sitting around the March parlor ourselves.”
We'll work on it later now go get your lunch tray while it's warm.”
To Helene's surprise, Marvella was standing in front of her. “I think I like Jo the best,” Marvella said in an almost pleasant tone.
What is it about her that you like, Marvella?”
She's strong. I'll bet nobody ever makes her cry. I like the way she is nice to her little sister.”
She's a lot like you Marvella. You are strong, I'll bet you don't cry and you are very nice to your little sister.”
Do you really think I'm strong like Jo?”
Yes, I do and I think you have a big heart too. You just have to open it a little to let people in.”
I better hurry up and eat so I can be back in time to hear more of the story. You are right about the crying. I never cry.” Marvella left the room with just a hint of a smile.
A good cry would do that girl a world of good thought Helene. Evelyn came into the room.
What have you done to Marvella? She was doing her best to hide the smile on her face.”
Louisa May Alcott gets all the credit for that. Marvella has decided she likes Jo March and I pointed out how she was a lot like her. I'm beginning to form an attachment to the girl. I hope she will come around a little. I spoke to Neville about the girls last night. He thinks Marvella will be a walk in the park compared to Prudence.”
He's in the dining room now. He sat down across from Marvella and she is actually talking to him. I think I heard him mention fishing in Camden Lake. She seems fascinated. I hope this works out for you. Marvella would thrive with a good family behind her.”
A while later Neville walked out of the dining room with Marvella on one side of him and Marissa on the other. “The girls and I talked it over and they have agreed to come stay with us for a few days. I promised if they didn't like it we would bring them back here. What do you think Miss Helene? Would you like some visitors for a few days?”
I would love to have visitors.” She hugged Marissa and she hugged her back. She placed her hand on Marvella's shoulder and noticed she didn't flinch. That was a good sign.
Mr. Neville says you have a copy of Little Women at your home. Do you suppose we could read more of it?”
I do have a copy at home but I have a better idea. There is a bookstore not too far from here. We'll stop there to pick up your very own copy and we can read it on the train.”
My very own book? I've never owned a book before.”
May I have my very own book too Miss Helene?”
Of course you may, Marissa. As soon as Mr. Neville and I fill out some papers and sign our name, we will visit the bookstore.”
Harvey and Margaret Wilson were anxious to get back to Camden Corners and their new family. They told Peggy her brother-in-law had been killed and wouldn't be bothering the children anymore. She was happy to hear that news.
Peggy, I want you to stay here as long as you need to. Arrangements have been made to have a doctor who specializes in head injuries visit your sister. She is receiving very good care now but maybe this doctor will have some ideas that will help her with her memory.
Miss Evelyn tells us you are very good with the children. You may not be aware of this but the villa has a scholarship program. How would you feel about attending college and becoming a teacher or a nurse? Whatever path you would like to pursue. You don't have to answer now. Give it some thought and Miss Evelyn will arrange it. When your sister is well, there is a small house not too far from here. It has been rented for you, your sister and the children. I think you will like it there and it's close to the school the children are attending and also close to the university.”
Mr. Wilson.” Peggy said trying to keep the tears at bay, “your generosity is overwhelming. I can't accept what you are offering. It is way too much. I am just happy the children had a place to live when they needed it. Now that Roger is gone, we should be able to manage on our own.”
Peggy, I'm sure you consider this charity. Believe me it isn't. I expect you to do wonderful things in your future. No matter what profession you choose you will be helping others all your life. You don't know me but I was a ruthless businessman until recently. I was very successful in all of my dealings except on the personal level. I made vast amounts of money. If I live to be 100, I won't be able to spend all the money I have made through the years. I only tell you this because I want you to know that the money itself isn't important to me. What is important is how you and the children will be faring in this world. Everyone needs a little head start and that is what you are getting. Please make an old man happy and accept my offer.”
Miss Evelyn spoke, “Peggy, I would accept Mr. Wilson's generosity. You and your sister will be better off in the future and that means the children will be better off too. Besides, I think there is a certain young man named Cliff Newman who would be more than happy to show you around campus.”
Peggy blushed. “Thank you Mr. Wilson. I promise, I will make you proud.” She gave him a hug and already he considered it money well spent.
Peggy kept in touch with Harvey and Margaret through the years. Her sister made a full recovery and began helping with the children at the villa herself. Peggy became a teacher and she and Cliff were married the day after graduation. Norma took classes while the children were in school and graduated from nursing school three years later. She married the doctor who cared for her all those many months in the hospital. He adopted her five and they adopted three more from the villa. Peggy and Cliff adopted a family of four and the following year a family of three. The sisters were reunited with their mother and siblings. Harvey and Margaret visited the families whenever they were in Greensboro.
I think Oscar and I will stay on here another day or two, said Nettie. “I have some friends I would like to see again and we want to stay close by the villa. Our business there isn't quite finished yet but I suspect it will be more than just the two of us arriving back in Camden Corners.”

The Harvest Begins

The Harvest Begins

Nick Rossi was enjoying the last few minutes he was spending with his wife and baby son before he was off to the vineyard. Lucinda was feeding Daniel his breakfast. The boy was growing so quickly. Nick was always so busy these days. Today was the day the grapes would be harvested for the first time. He hoped he had hired enough workers. He was skeptical about the young boy named Bobby Warren. He said he was 16 but Nick had his doubts. He wondered if he was homeless. He seemed almost desperate to find a job. Bobby asked when he would be paid. That usually meant the worker wasn't planning to stay on the job for too long. Even so, Nick had a soft spot for the kid and hired him.
Nick arrived at 3:30 and some of the men were beginning to show up. Bobby had been up since 2:30. Addie heard him moving around and started breakfast for him. Leo drove him to the vineyard.
How would you like to take a spin at the wheel on the way home, Bobby?”
Are you sure? That would be swell. Wait til the children see me driving an automobile. I guess we should start thinking about leaving since I'll be able to pay for a tent for us after I get paid today.”
We'll see about that,” said Leo knowing Millie would never allow those children to live in a tent. “I'll be by to pick you up at dusk. Don't worry, you will do a fine job.”
Leo was tempted to give the boy a hug. He looked so young.
Good morning Bobby. Come have a cup of coffee to warm you up. Once the sun comes out the temperature will begin to climb.” Nick noticed he had on a heavy coat that looked fairly new. He wondered if the boy had been taken in by a family in town. He thought he saw Leo Schmidt drive away. It would be just like Millie to put the boy up.
Bobby had never tasted coffee before. His mother drank it sometimes but not near the end. She said she didn't need frivolous things like coffee anymore. It smelled good to him but he didn't have any money. It was bad enough he was taking charity from Miss Millie.
No thank you Mr. Rossi.”
Call me Nick. My pa will think you are talking to him. His name is Lou. Papa, come meet the youngest member of our crew.”
Lou was anxious to get started. “Come on young man. I'll show you how to pick this beautiful fruit without harming one grape on the cluster. We aren't in any rush so we will take our time. You will get paid for the hours you work not the amount of grapes you pick.”
Yes sir. I'm ready to go to work.”
Lou explained the process in detail. “You'll need to find where the stem meets the cluster of grapes. Cut the stem as close to the top of the cluster as possible. Don't cut straight across, try to cut it diagonally. Now carefully lay the cluster in the basket. Lay the next ones very gently so you don't bruise the grapes on the bottom. Don't fill the basket too full, we have plenty of baskets so help yourself to another. Alright Bobby, you are ready to start.”
Bobby's hands were shaking. He knew how important it was that he did just what Lou told him to. He remembered everything he said and was able to pick up a little speed after the first few vines were harvested.
Bobby, I couldn't do any better myself.”
Lou loved the grapes and loved the land. He talked through the whole row of vines about the wonders of the earth. Bobby seemed to be taking it all in. Or maybe he was just being polite.
They started down the next row. Lou took one side while Bobby harvested the other. It was then he began asking Lou questions. Lou could tell by the questions that he had heard every word he said. This boy was truly interested in what he was doing. He was better at the job than some of the older, experienced men they'd hired.
After two hours of working, the Hightower ladies came out with refreshments.
Come on Bobby, let's get something to eat. We have worked up an appetite.”
Lou, I don't have any money to buy anything so I'll just keep working.”
Money! You don't need money, son. The Hightowers know everyone works better after a break and something to eat and drink. Come on help yourself. That's what it's here for.”
How is Bobby doing?” Nick asked his father.
He's a good worker, Nick. I know you had your doubts about hiring such a young fellow but he caught on quickly and he is handling those grape clusters like they were newborn babes. I asked him if he planned to stay on and he said he hoped he could. He seems to have the weight of the world on his shoulders. I don't want to push him to talk. I'm hoping he will open up soon.”
Lucinda came by earlier. Cassandra wanted to help with the harvest. I cut them off the vine and she laid them in the basket. I wish you could have seen how carefully she handled them. Anyway, Lucinda ran into Millie and Helene's friend Margaret in Nichol's General Store. They were buying clothes in various sizes. Seems there is a family of 7 children and no parents who arrived in town yesterday. You know Millie. She had to take them in. I'm wondering if Bobby might be one of the children. Lucinda counted 6 of the them. Cassandra was happy because she has more playmates. They are all meeting in the park at lunchtime for a picnic.”
Harvey explained the situation to Oscar. “Do you think I'd have a problem adopting the children, Oscar?”
Since you aren't married, adoption may not be possible. Because the children don't have parents, and if the oldest boy agrees, you could be named their legal guardian. Harvey, have you really thought it through. This would be a major undertaking for you. It would be an enormous challenge to raise seven youngsters even for a young man who is raising his own children. You say the youngest is around 5 or 6. You would be giving up at least ten years of your life.”
I know, Oscar. Maybe I am being foolish but I think I could give them a good life. Its not as though I will be washing clothes and cooking meals. I have people doing that for me. Also, I didn't mention this earlier but I have fallen in love with Helene Robinson's friend, Margaret. We spoke briefly about raising the children together.”
Margaret, yes I've met her. She is a lovely woman. You old fox. You have had a busy few days.”
There is something else I'd like you to investigate for me. Margaret tells of a home in Albany for homeless boys. She volunteers there a couple of days a week. It is different than an orphanage. The children go to the local schools. The older ones are able to have jobs outside of the facility. It is less sterile than the traditional orphanage. I have that big house in Greensboro that I don't intend to return to. It has separate wings and I was hoping it could house both boys and girls. I realize it would take some work to have it modified for that purpose. As you saw, there is enough land to build several more houses and the apple orchard is famous in the area for the best apples around. I think somewhere I have my dear mother's recipe for apple pie. I think she would be pleased to have young people bake her delicious pie. Tell me Oscar, what do you think? Could this plan work?”
Harvey, you haven't just turned over a new leaf you flipped the entire tree. It's a wonderful idea. I will get right on it. I like the real you, Harvey.”
Thank you Oscar. That is kind of you to say especially after I gave Emma and her chums such a hard time. Maybe I can make up for my some of my cruel antics in the time I have left.”
The day went by swiftly for Bobby. He watched and listened as the grapes were gently soaked and placed in vats to begin the fermentation process. He had found a friend in Lou Rossi and was anxious to come back the next day. He waved goodbye to Lou and Nick and spotted Leo waiting for him. Leo was in the passenger seat and Harvey Wilson was sitting behind him.
Hello Bobby. How was your day with the grapes?”
It was terrific. Lou showed me just how to cut the grape clusters. He knows everything there is to know about grapes and the earth. I can't wait to go back tomorrow.”
You ready to learn how to drive this automobile?
I sure am. I can't believe you are letting me drive. I hope Miss Millie doesn't object.”
As long as Miss Millie doesn't have to drive it herself, she doesn't care who else does.”
Leo's instructions were clear. Harvey was listening to everything he said. If he was going to be making trips back and forth to Greensboro, he'd better learn to drive this dad gum thing.
After a rough couple of starts, Bobby handled the auto well. Harvey doubted he would catch on that quickly.
The children were all playing on the front lawn when they drove up. Bobby waved and his siblings came running.
Bobby, you're driving an automobile!” said Teddy with a bit of envy in his voice.
Next time it will be your turn Teddy,” Leo told him.
Did you get the tent Bobby?” asked Willa.
I plum forgot about the tent Willa.”
Oh I'm so happy. Miss Addie said I could help her make a cherry pie tomorrow morning. Bobby, I don't want to leave here. I love it so much. I don't miss Mama as much when I'm here. I wish we could stay forever.”
You know we can't Willa. Now don't upset the others. Go back to your games.”
Bobby, I'd like to talk to you privately. We will go to Miss Millie's study where we won't be disturbed.”
Did I do something wrong, Mr. Harvey,” Bobby said as Harvey closed the door behind him.
No son, let me tell you what I have in mind.”
Harvey explained that he had spoken with Oscar Crowley about adopting the children. That might not be possible just yet because he didn't have a wife. However, he may be able to be named as legal guardian of them all. Being the oldest, Bobby would be making the decision to accept his offer or not. Bobby remained quiet as Harvey explained about the house being built. He had spoken to Reggie Blackburn earlier and there was a possibility the plans could be revised enough to add two additional bedrooms. The children would stay in Miss Millie's house until their new home was ready for them to move in.
Mr. Harvey, do you have any other children?”
No, Bobby. I have never been married and I don't have children.”
We can be a handful you know. Mama would tell us that when we acted up.”
Bobby, I have spent most of my life being a miserly old fool with no friends and nobody who cared whether I was alive or dead. In the last several weeks I have gained friendships I thought would never happen, I've fallen in love for the first time since I was not much older than you are, and I have discovered a family that I want and need and I think you might need me too. I only hope you want me to be your....maybe not father, how about grandfather?”
Mr. Harvey, are you sure? I promise I will be a good son to you. I'll make sure the others are always on their best behavior. It won't be charity if you are our kin. When may I tell the children?”
Bobby, I don't want any of you to be on your best behavior all the time. I want you just to be yourselves.”
Mr. Harvey there is just one other thing. We don't need more than four bedrooms. I've already figured it out. You will have one, Teddy and I will have another, Stevie and Ralphie in the third and all the girls in the fourth. I don't think any of us could sleep in a bedroom alone.”
I'll tell Mr. Blackburn to keep going just as planned. Oh, by the way, would you mind if someday Miss Margaret moved in with us?”
I knew it was Miss Margaret you are stuck on. I think she likes you too. A man can tell things like that.”
Lets go tell the other children. Maybe we'd better not say anything about Miss Margaret just yet. She hasn't said 'yes'.”
Don't worry, she will,” Bobby said as he walked out into the yard. “Children, come give our new grandpa a hug.”
They all stopped their play and looked in Bobby's direction.
Mr. Harvey is going to be our guardian. We will live in a house by the lake. He will adopt us when he asks someone to be his wife.”
Everyone, even the children looked in Margaret's direction.
