The Visitor

The Visitor

Millie darling. Please get a hold of yourself. Prudence, it can't be you. We buried you six months ago.” Leland Harvey said as he was trying to keep his wife upright.
I'm not Prudence, you fool. Everyone knows I am beautiful whereas she is mildly pretty. What do you mean you buried her? Why would you do a thing like that?”
Because she was dead. What other reason could there possibly be?” Millie said as she was collecting herself after the shock of seeing Prudence's face looking back at her. “Who, may I ask, are you?”
Oh for heaven sake. Where is Neville? I must get to the bottom of this. How did my dear cousin die? I'm sure Neville had something to do with it.”
Neville doesn't live here. He has a home by the lake. He is there with his daughters and son. They are preparing for a wedding.”
I thought Prudence only had two daughters. Not that it matters. She wasn't much of a mother to them anyway.”
Who are you and what business do you have with my brother?”
So you are the sister-in-law. I don't think Prudence ever spoke of you.”
I'm not surprised. I only spoke of her when I was forced into it. Now suppose you start by telling me your name.”
I am Lavinia Carstairs. Widow of the late Rutherford D. Carstairs. I trust you have heard of him. He was from royalty of course.”
Of course. What may I help you with Mrs. Carstairs? We were about to leave the house.”
Oh yes, the wedding. Just tell me where I can find Neville's little home and I'll be on my way.”
Not on your life, lady. You are not going to upset my brother on his wedding day. I would suggest you take yourself and your royal derriere back to wherever it is you came from.”
I have come a long way and I will not leave until I see Neville. You tell him to meet me at that pub I saw down the street. If he knows what's good for him he will be there in 30 minutes.”
Lavinia was out the door and into a carriage. “Hurry it up driver, I'm thirsty.”
I wonder what that woman is up to. I never heard that Prudence had an identical cousin. I can't believe there were two of them. I'm not going to let it bother me. Let's hurry Leland. I want to get the cake in the carriage and on to Neville's house.”
The Merryweather house was full of hustle and bustle. Neville couldn't believe he and Helene would finally be husband and wife. Everything was going along smoothly, it was a beautiful late summer day. The three tiered cake had arrived safely along with Millie and Leland. Nothing could go wrong.
Neville,” said Millie, “we had a visitor today. She says her name is Lavinia Carstairs. She hadn't heard of Prudence's death but I must admit she didn't seem disturbed by it. She looks exactly like Prudence. I almost fainted when I opened the door.”
What could she possibly want? I haven't seen that woman in years She and Prudence had a falling out. I have no idea what the reason was but I can't say I ever missed her.”
She insisted you meet her at O'Sullivan's and stormed out. I told her I wasn't going to disturb you on your wedding day. I refused to tell her where you live.”
I suppose she could find out very easily. Maybe I should take a ride over there. She probably needs money. I think that is the only reason she ever came around to see Prudence.”
Do you want Leland to go with you? I'm sure he wouldn't mind.”
No, I'll be fine I am accustomed to dealing with women who have been drinking. I'm an expert at it thanks to Prudence.”
Be careful Neville.”
Millie had an uneasy feeling. Leland came up beside her. “He's gone to see her, I assume?”
Yes, he was afraid she might come here and interrupt the wedding.”
Neville walked into the pub. He spotted Lavinia. It sent chills down his spine. He'd forgotten how much she looked like Prudence.
Without any pleasantries, he said, “What did you want to see me about Lavinia? Spit it out, I'm in a hurry.”
Neville darling. Don't you have a kiss for your wife's cousin?”
No. Tell me what you want or I'll leave right now.”
Neville, you are so ill-mannered. Tell me dear, how are you spending your wife's money these days? Buying little trinkets for her replacement?”
You have two seconds Lavinia.”
Alright. I want Prudence's money. It is rightfully mine. Her father cheated my father out of the family fortune.”
There is nothing I can do about that. The money is in a trust fund for our daughters. It will stay there until they are 25 years old. You will need to consult an attorney if you want to contest Prudence's will. I'm leaving. Our business is completed.”
That's what you think. I need money now. I'm not going through any lawyers. I went to see Prudence yesterday to tell her it was time to pay up and now I find out she is dead. Neville darling, I was always able to get money out of your dear wife. I'm surprised you didn't notice her funds have been dwindling through the years. You see, I have been blackmailing her and now I will blackmail you.”
What in the devil are you talking about? Blackmail? You must be insane.”
Don't speak to me that way or I may double my demands. I have the feeling you are much wealthier than you will admit.”
I'm leaving Lavinia,” Neville stood up to leave.
Would you like me to tell your precious daughter who her father really is?”
Neville stopped in his tracks. “Now, I know you are insane.”
But you are wondering which one, aren't you.”
Melinda and Melissa are my daughters. I don't know what your game is but I do believe what you are attempting to do is illegal.”
Have you guessed yet? One of those girls doesn't look like you at all. Am I right?”
Neville's head was swimming. He had to admit Melinda's hair was darker than anyone in the family. Melissa had brown eyes. Prudence had blue eyes and his were green. I've got to get out of here and think.
I'm leaving Lavinia. Get yourself a lawyer and sue me.”
You never met my late husband Rutherford did you. His daughter is the spitting image of him in his younger days.”
Neville was shaking from anger and fear. He didn't care if Prudence was unfaithful to him but he did care if one of his precious girls was not his own flesh and blood. How would he tell them? He rode back to the house. The guests had all arrived and were sitting in the their seats waiting for the ceremony to start. He wondered why he didn't go along with Helene's wishes to keep the wedding small.
This had started out to be a perfect day and now Prudence was ruining it from the grave. One look at him and Helene knew things had not gone well at the pub. Millie told her about the visitor and who she was.
Neville we can call this off. I know you are upset about something.”
Oh please, Helene. I need you now more than ever. Lavinia was blackmailing Prudence all these years. She said I am not the father of one of my daughters. How can that be possible? I love them both so much. I know I'm going to have to tell them but I don't know how to do it. Wouldn't it be ironic if I gained a son this year but lost a daughter?”
You are not going to lose a daughter Neville. Those girls adore you. Let's not let Prudence or her cousin ruin our day. Go stand by Vicar Will and wait for me to come down the aisle to you.”
He did what Helene said.
His daughters walked down the aisle between the sets of chairs, first his youngest daughter, Melissa. He could see her playing with her dolls, jumping from her swing into his arms. Next came Melinda. She was always a feisty one. He remembered how determined she was to walk when she was only 10 months old. She kept falling but would get up and try again. To think he almost lost her when he was being stubborn about her seeing Michael. Both of the girls were his daughters. Being a parent meant much more than just having the same blood running through a child's veins.
Neville was able to forget his trouble for just a few minutes when he saw his bride. She was a vision in a pale blue chiffon gown. She gave him a smile and his heart beat faster in his chest. The love of his life would finally be his wife.
The ceremony was over quickly. The reception was in full swing when Neville looked up and saw an obviously inebriated Lavinia walking toward him.
What about it big boy. You gonna pay up or do I spill the beans? Pretty little fillies you got there. They don't look too much like you Neville. Maybe you aren't anybody's father.”
James and Leland both stood up and took hold of Lavinia's arms. “Let's go sleep this off, ma'am.”
Let go of me. I am Mrs. Rutherford D. Carstairs the Duchess of Elderberry wine or something like that.” Lavinia started to laugh at her joke.
The men carried her to the carriage she came in on. Leland handed the driver a few dollars and told him to drive her to Greensboro if he had to but get her out of here.
The party continued in spite of the interruption.
After the last guest left, Neville told his children he wanted to see them in the parlor. He had something to discuss with them. Millie, James and Michael, you should be there too.
What's wrong father?” said Melinda. “Did Cousin Lavinia upset you? You know she and mother never got along. I think they were jealous of one another.”
I don't know how I'm going to tell you this girls. First of all I want you to know I love both of you very much. Nothing will ever change that. Lavinia told me today that your mother had an affair with Lavinia's husband Rutherford and that he is the father of one of you.”
Father, you didn't believe her, did you? Mother told us all about that many years ago. Lavinia made her angry and Mother told her she had slept with Rutherford and that she was carrying his child. It wasn't true. Mother had her faults but she also had good taste. Did you ever see Rutherford Carstairs?”
No but why would your mother tell you something like that.”
It was before she began drinking so heavily. We were talking about the funniest thing that ever happened to us. Mother said she told Lavinia the story to make her angry and she succeeded. Lavinia was so mad at Mother she started to blackmail her. Mother never let on that it wasn't true because she felt guilty that Grandfather swindled his brother out of the family fortune. Every time Lavinia came by and threatened to tell you, she gave her more money. It eased her conscience somewhat.”
I still don't know why she would tell her young daughters she'd made up sleeping with someone and one of you belonged to this Rutherford character.”
You do remember Mother, don't you? She was a spoiled rich girl who never did grow up. Melissa and I were the adults in that relationship and we knew it.”
Melissa tell Father what Mr. Carstairs looked like.”
Melissa laughed. “He had a beak for a nose. His hair was as red as a carrot. The poor man had no chin at all. Mother said Lavinia married him because he told her he was a Duke. She later found out he was from New Jersey. Look at us father, do you see any resemblance to a man with a beak nose, no chin and orange hair?”
He glanced over at Millie. Her hair was mostly gray but he could see the same shade of brown that Melinda had. She also had brown eyes, the same color as Melissa.
I've been a fool. I don't know why I believed that woman but I wouldn't put anything past Prudence.”
Mother had her faults but she was faithful to you most of the time you were married. Melissa and I were privy to every thought she ever had. I hate to say it but she didn't deserve your loyalty all these months. Now go enjoy the company of your bride and stop worrying about us. If you ever doubt we are your daughters again just look at us. We both look like our father and that is definitely you.”
Come on Mr. Merryweather, come enjoy Mrs. Merryweather's company,” Helene said with a smile.
The next morning at a respectable 10:00, Lavinia Carstairs knocked on the Merryweather front door. She was greeted by the whole family plus a few she couldn't identify.
Neville invited her into the parlor. “Lavinia, this is the end of the line for you. I am giving you this envelope with enough cash for you to find a place to live and keep you going for a month or two. There will be no more money coming your way from this household. I think you know your husband couldn't be the father of my either of my daughters. You attempted to blackmail me and the law does not look too kindly on that endeavor. We wish you luck in the future but we will not be a part of your life. I would encourage you to spend some of that money learning a trade. I think you will find it is very therapeutic to pay your own way in this world. We bid you farewell Lavinia.”
Lavinia walked out of the house. What a fool Prudence was. If she had only worked at her marriage she could have been a happy woman. She had a wonderful husband and two lovely daughters. She didn't deserve any of them. What shall I do now? I'm not getting any younger and I don't have any prospects. Maybe I should think about getting a job. I know it won't be in this town though. Lavinia rode the train west. She applied for a job as a sales clerk in a department store. She was one of the few women hired. She was so popular with the customers, she was promoted to department head. The president of the company took notice of this attractive woman. He was a widower with grown children. Lavinia knew a good thing when she saw him. It didn't take long before they were married. Instead of giving up her job with the company, she worked along side her husband. She had finally found happiness in her life.
Two years later Neville opened his mail. There was a letter from Lavinia.
Dear Cousin Neville,
I know you told me not to contact you again. I have debated whether or not to write to you. The truth is, I owe you a debt of gratitude. You suggested I find a job. Because you promised you would not support me any longer I did just that. I found a wonderful man that I am happy to be sharing my life with. Yes, he is rich and powerful, I guess I couldn't settle for anything less. However, I am still working and have my very own money to spend. It is a good feeling. I owe you my new life Neville and I wanted you to know how grateful I am to you for forcing me to see that I could become a person I truly like. Just so you don't think I have changed completely, I will remind you that I am much prettier than Prudence ever was.
Sincerely, Lavinia

Wedding Bells

Wedding Bells

The Warren children piled into Harvey's carriage along with Margaret Slater. The children won the hearts of the formerly gruff man who was making changes in his life daily. He didn't think it was possible to fall in love again, especially at his age, but he hadn't met Margaret. She was a breath of fresh air. The youngsters had taken to her immediately. She loved children and it showed.
Margaret's only son had moved with his wife and children to New York City shortly before she packed her bags for a visit with her friend, Helene. The visit had been life changing. She met Harvey Wilson on the train coming into town and nothing would ever be the same for her.
I'll have to look into getting a bigger carriage, won't I? I don't think there will be enough room for all nine of us if these youngsters keep growing.”
Our pa had a buckboard and we all fit on that real good,” Teddy said from the back seat. “It wasn't fancy like your carriage though. The seats were pretty hard.”
This carriage feels good. I don't mind being squeezed. Do you Willa?” Callie piped in.
Let's be grateful for what we have,” Willa told her brother and sister.
I want you children to always say what's on your mind. We are a family now and everyone has a voice. I think it would be a wonderful idea to have a buckboard with padded seats.”
Lulu, the youngest spoke up, “I have something on my mind.”
What is it Lulu?”
I'm happy you will be our Grandpa when the judge says you can but I really wish you would marry Miss Margaret so she could be our Grandma.”
What do you say children? Would you like Miss Margaret to be your Grandma?”
Boy would we!” they all shouted at once.
How could you turn down a proposal like that? Miss Margaret would you do me the honor of marrying me and becoming a grandma to these children?”
Mr. Wilson, I would love being a grandma to these beautiful children and a wife to you.” She squeezed Harvey's hand.
He smiled broadly as the children climbed over one another to give Margaret a hug.
Here is the new home of the Wilson family,” Harvey announced as they pulled up to the house being constructed.
Well, what have we here?” said Reggie when he saw them all. “Harvey, I couldn't figure out why you wanted such a big house for just yourself but now I see the reason or should I say reasons.”
Reggie, I'd like you to meet the soon to be Mrs. Wilson and the seven Wilson children. Margaret say hello to the finest builder in the county.” He introduced the children.
Fellas take a break. We have some young people who want to see the inside of their new home. Go ahead take a look, there is still work to be done but we will be finished soon.”
Harvey, it's going to be beautiful. I can just picture us sitting on the porch overlooking the water. What a wonderful idea you had to build a house on the lake.”
Come look inside, I want you to make any changes you would like. I'm sure Jamison Bentley will be able to come up with some ideas if you are dissatisfied with anything.”
Dissatisfied, it is a dream home. Look at the size of this kitchen. I hope you will let me use it occasionally, I know you will be hiring a cook but I have missed cooking. Not that I have done much of it since Ronnie left home.”
My dear, you may do anything you wish.”
They could hear the children's laughter as they ran from room to room. Lulu appeared before them with a sheepish look on her face.
Do you think Mama and Papa feel bad because we are having fun even though they aren't here with us?”
I think your mama and papa looked down from heaven and saw Mr. Wilson and because he was all alone, they made sure you came into his life. They loved you very much and they always will. They are happy when their children are happy. Now go ahead and have fun Lulu, I know that is what your mama and papa want you to do.”
Lulu walked off to join the others with a happy smile on her face.
You know just what to say to children, Margaret. I'm grateful you will be by my side to raise them. I hope my ego didn't get the best of me when I thought I could be a good father to these children. I only know I felt a need to protect and care for them. I love them and I love you. Do you think you will be happy here with us?”
I know I will be. I had such a void when Ronnie and his family moved away. Now my heart is full again. That reminds me, I must send a telegram to him with our news.”
How soon do you think you will be my wife? I know young ladies like to have time to plan their weddings.”
Harvey, where do you see a young lady around here? I don't need any planning time. Just a minister and a groom are the only requirements.”
Harvey held her in his arms. He couldn't wait to make her his bride. He hoped her son would approve of the marriage.
The children had chosen their bedrooms and had already had a turn sliding down the banister. They let the workman get back to their jobs and were on their way back to Millie's for lunch. They made one stop to the post office to wire Ronnie about his mother's upcoming marriage.
It was a surprise to Margaret when later that afternoon, a telegram was delivered saying Ronald would be arriving on the 5:15 from New York City.
Margaret and Harvey met Ronnie's train. Margaret saw him step off the train and ran to him.
Oh Ronnie, it's so good to see you. Come say hello to Harvey. I can't wait for you to meet the children. They are waiting impatiently for their big brother.”
Mother, have you completely lost your mind?” Ronnie said. “You know nothing about this man. He is a scoundrel who has hurt people all his life. Seven orphans too? I won't stand for it?”
Ronnie, what in the name of heaven has gotten into you? Yes, Harvey had some unfortunate dealings in the past but he has changed. As far as the seven orphans, as you call them, they are seven of the most wonderful children you would ever want to meet. I love Harvey and I love those children. You owe all of us an apology.”
This was not the reunion Margaret anticipated. She was shocked by her son's behavior. Ronnie stomped toward the train to pick up his bag.
Margaret dear, I don't blame Ronnie for being skeptical. I'm sure I would have objected if my mother had accepted a marriage proposal from someone with a reputation like mine. I don't want to cause a rift between you and your son,” Harvey said quietly.
Are you saying we shouldn't be married? Harvey, we can't disappoint the children. I love my son but he will not interfere in our plans. I have every intention of being Mrs. Harvey Wilson before the week ends.”
You wrote that Aunt Helene is being married herself. How does James feel about that?” Ronnie asked.
James is supportive of his mother and is very happy with her choice of a mate. Neville Merryweather is James' father after all.”
Another fine, upstanding gentleman, I see.”
Ronald Herbert Slater, if you keep up this insulting chatter you are perfectly welcome to turn around and get back on that train. You are a grown man but you are acting like an insolent child. I will not have it.”
Ronnie knew his behavior was abominable, he couldn't seem to help himself. Elaine told him to calm down before he boarded the train. He should have listened to her. In reality, this Harvey Wilson fellow wasn't at all like he'd imagined. He was very loving toward his mother. Maybe he had him pegged wrong. It still irked him that his mother had found a life without him. He was counting on her to move to New York City. Now it looked like that would never happen.
They arrived at Millie's and Ronnie was greeted with open arms by the brood of children waiting there. He was polite but distant. He also liked his mother's new friends in spite of himself. It was good to see Aunt Helene. She wasn't really his aunt but he had called her that for years and it had become a habit.
Helene could see he wasn't as happy about his mother's future as everyone else was. She sat down with him on front porch.
I know you are worried about your mother. I hope you will believe me when I tell you Harvey Wilson is a very kind man. He is very much in love with your mother. His behavior in the past has not always been honorable, but he is making up for it now.”
Aunt Helene, I don't know why she is jumping into marriage with this man. She has only known him a matter of weeks. She is not a young woman and to take on seven children is too much of a burden for her. Elaine and I bought a house with an extra bedroom so she could live with us one day. I can see that will never happen now.”
Ronnie, could it be that you are jealous of your mother's new family? You know you will always be her son. Her heart is big enough for your family and her new one too.”
Aunt Helene, you know me so well. I was shocked to hear mother was planning to marry again. I think I felt guilty for leaving her all alone in Albany. I have really made of mess of everything, haven't I?”
No my dear, you haven't. I think you will find there is something about this town that brings out the forgiving nature of people.”
Ralphie says you don't want to be our big brother. Don't you like us Ronnie?” Lulu looked up at him with eyes like saucers.
Lulu, I would like nothing better than to be your big brother. Now shall we go over there and play ball with the others? I want you on my team.” Lulu smiled and held Ronnie's hand as they ran together.
I have a little girl just about your age and a boy who is even older. Do you know you will be their aunt?”
Will Ralphie be their uncle?” Lulu giggled so hard she fell down.
Margaret stood at the door. “I don't know what you said to him Helene but I think my Ronnie is back.”
He would have come around by himself eventually, I just pointed out a few things.”
Harvey stood at the doorway too. “He's a fine looking young man my dear. Look how nicely he is playing with the children. I think he has won them over. He seems to be enjoying them too.”
Ronnie looked up and saw his mother standing with Harvey Wilson. He broke away from the children.
He held out his hand. “Harvey, I owe you an apology. I believe you care for my mother and I can see she cares deeply for you. I acted like a buffoon earlier and I'm very sorry about that.”
Don't give it another thought son, I've been a buffoon most of my life.”
I was thinking, Mother, after you are married, why don't you and Harvey plan a trip to New York City. Lulu is anxious to meet her niece and nephew. She is excited to know she is an aunt. Elaine would love to meet everyone too.” He hugged his mother.
I'm afraid I can only stay for a couple of days. I hope you are planning the wedding soon. I'd like to be the one to give my mother in marriage. That is if it's alright with you, Mother.”
I'll call the vicar right now before anyone changes his mind,” Harvey laughed.
I would like to have the ceremony take place on the porch of our new home overlooking the lake. Would that be alright with you Harvey?”
I'd marry you on a mountain top if I thought I could climb that far.”
They were married the very next day. Addie and Helene stayed up until the wee hours of the morning preparing the wedding cake. The ceremony was beautiful. Ronnie was sorry he had been so stubborn. Elaine would loved to have been there for the wedding. He boarded the train the next day with kisses and hugs for his new family.
Don't worry about your mother, Ronnie. I will take good care of her.”
I know you will Harvey. I should have learned long ago that my mother has good instincts about people and she was definitely right in your case.”
Harvey's guardianship went through quickly and the adoption proceedings had begun.
Bobby was still on the job at the winery. Lou Rossi found a new protege. Bobby was a promising student.
Teddy could usually be found at the new house. Reggie was impressed with his interest in building. It was the same as Reggie's had been when he was Teddy's age.
The newlyweds were enjoying their new family. Millie was happy to have her many bedrooms almost filled. It was nearing September and she and Neville were counting the days until Neville and Helene were married.
There was a knock on the door, Millie opened it and looked into the eyes of Prudence Merryweather. Leland held her upright as she swooned into his arms.

The Harvest Begins

The Harvest Begins

Nick Rossi was enjoying the last few minutes he was spending with his wife and baby son before he was off to the vineyard. Lucinda was feeding Daniel his breakfast. The boy was growing so quickly. Nick was always so busy these days. Today was the day the grapes would be harvested for the first time. He hoped he had hired enough workers. He was skeptical about the young boy named Bobby Warren. He said he was 16 but Nick had his doubts. He wondered if he was homeless. He seemed almost desperate to find a job. Bobby asked when he would be paid. That usually meant the worker wasn't planning to stay on the job for too long. Even so, Nick had a soft spot for the kid and hired him.
Nick arrived at 3:30 and some of the men were beginning to show up. Bobby had been up since 2:30. Addie heard him moving around and started breakfast for him. Leo drove him to the vineyard.
How would you like to take a spin at the wheel on the way home, Bobby?”
Are you sure? That would be swell. Wait til the children see me driving an automobile. I guess we should start thinking about leaving since I'll be able to pay for a tent for us after I get paid today.”
We'll see about that,” said Leo knowing Millie would never allow those children to live in a tent. “I'll be by to pick you up at dusk. Don't worry, you will do a fine job.”
Leo was tempted to give the boy a hug. He looked so young.
Good morning Bobby. Come have a cup of coffee to warm you up. Once the sun comes out the temperature will begin to climb.” Nick noticed he had on a heavy coat that looked fairly new. He wondered if the boy had been taken in by a family in town. He thought he saw Leo Schmidt drive away. It would be just like Millie to put the boy up.
Bobby had never tasted coffee before. His mother drank it sometimes but not near the end. She said she didn't need frivolous things like coffee anymore. It smelled good to him but he didn't have any money. It was bad enough he was taking charity from Miss Millie.
No thank you Mr. Rossi.”
Call me Nick. My pa will think you are talking to him. His name is Lou. Papa, come meet the youngest member of our crew.”
Lou was anxious to get started. “Come on young man. I'll show you how to pick this beautiful fruit without harming one grape on the cluster. We aren't in any rush so we will take our time. You will get paid for the hours you work not the amount of grapes you pick.”
Yes sir. I'm ready to go to work.”
Lou explained the process in detail. “You'll need to find where the stem meets the cluster of grapes. Cut the stem as close to the top of the cluster as possible. Don't cut straight across, try to cut it diagonally. Now carefully lay the cluster in the basket. Lay the next ones very gently so you don't bruise the grapes on the bottom. Don't fill the basket too full, we have plenty of baskets so help yourself to another. Alright Bobby, you are ready to start.”
Bobby's hands were shaking. He knew how important it was that he did just what Lou told him to. He remembered everything he said and was able to pick up a little speed after the first few vines were harvested.
Bobby, I couldn't do any better myself.”
Lou loved the grapes and loved the land. He talked through the whole row of vines about the wonders of the earth. Bobby seemed to be taking it all in. Or maybe he was just being polite.
They started down the next row. Lou took one side while Bobby harvested the other. It was then he began asking Lou questions. Lou could tell by the questions that he had heard every word he said. This boy was truly interested in what he was doing. He was better at the job than some of the older, experienced men they'd hired.
After two hours of working, the Hightower ladies came out with refreshments.
Come on Bobby, let's get something to eat. We have worked up an appetite.”
Lou, I don't have any money to buy anything so I'll just keep working.”
Money! You don't need money, son. The Hightowers know everyone works better after a break and something to eat and drink. Come on help yourself. That's what it's here for.”
How is Bobby doing?” Nick asked his father.
He's a good worker, Nick. I know you had your doubts about hiring such a young fellow but he caught on quickly and he is handling those grape clusters like they were newborn babes. I asked him if he planned to stay on and he said he hoped he could. He seems to have the weight of the world on his shoulders. I don't want to push him to talk. I'm hoping he will open up soon.”
Lucinda came by earlier. Cassandra wanted to help with the harvest. I cut them off the vine and she laid them in the basket. I wish you could have seen how carefully she handled them. Anyway, Lucinda ran into Millie and Helene's friend Margaret in Nichol's General Store. They were buying clothes in various sizes. Seems there is a family of 7 children and no parents who arrived in town yesterday. You know Millie. She had to take them in. I'm wondering if Bobby might be one of the children. Lucinda counted 6 of the them. Cassandra was happy because she has more playmates. They are all meeting in the park at lunchtime for a picnic.”
Harvey explained the situation to Oscar. “Do you think I'd have a problem adopting the children, Oscar?”
Since you aren't married, adoption may not be possible. Because the children don't have parents, and if the oldest boy agrees, you could be named their legal guardian. Harvey, have you really thought it through. This would be a major undertaking for you. It would be an enormous challenge to raise seven youngsters even for a young man who is raising his own children. You say the youngest is around 5 or 6. You would be giving up at least ten years of your life.”
I know, Oscar. Maybe I am being foolish but I think I could give them a good life. Its not as though I will be washing clothes and cooking meals. I have people doing that for me. Also, I didn't mention this earlier but I have fallen in love with Helene Robinson's friend, Margaret. We spoke briefly about raising the children together.”
Margaret, yes I've met her. She is a lovely woman. You old fox. You have had a busy few days.”
There is something else I'd like you to investigate for me. Margaret tells of a home in Albany for homeless boys. She volunteers there a couple of days a week. It is different than an orphanage. The children go to the local schools. The older ones are able to have jobs outside of the facility. It is less sterile than the traditional orphanage. I have that big house in Greensboro that I don't intend to return to. It has separate wings and I was hoping it could house both boys and girls. I realize it would take some work to have it modified for that purpose. As you saw, there is enough land to build several more houses and the apple orchard is famous in the area for the best apples around. I think somewhere I have my dear mother's recipe for apple pie. I think she would be pleased to have young people bake her delicious pie. Tell me Oscar, what do you think? Could this plan work?”
Harvey, you haven't just turned over a new leaf you flipped the entire tree. It's a wonderful idea. I will get right on it. I like the real you, Harvey.”
Thank you Oscar. That is kind of you to say especially after I gave Emma and her chums such a hard time. Maybe I can make up for my some of my cruel antics in the time I have left.”
The day went by swiftly for Bobby. He watched and listened as the grapes were gently soaked and placed in vats to begin the fermentation process. He had found a friend in Lou Rossi and was anxious to come back the next day. He waved goodbye to Lou and Nick and spotted Leo waiting for him. Leo was in the passenger seat and Harvey Wilson was sitting behind him.
Hello Bobby. How was your day with the grapes?”
It was terrific. Lou showed me just how to cut the grape clusters. He knows everything there is to know about grapes and the earth. I can't wait to go back tomorrow.”
You ready to learn how to drive this automobile?
I sure am. I can't believe you are letting me drive. I hope Miss Millie doesn't object.”
As long as Miss Millie doesn't have to drive it herself, she doesn't care who else does.”
Leo's instructions were clear. Harvey was listening to everything he said. If he was going to be making trips back and forth to Greensboro, he'd better learn to drive this dad gum thing.
After a rough couple of starts, Bobby handled the auto well. Harvey doubted he would catch on that quickly.
The children were all playing on the front lawn when they drove up. Bobby waved and his siblings came running.
Bobby, you're driving an automobile!” said Teddy with a bit of envy in his voice.
Next time it will be your turn Teddy,” Leo told him.
Did you get the tent Bobby?” asked Willa.
I plum forgot about the tent Willa.”
Oh I'm so happy. Miss Addie said I could help her make a cherry pie tomorrow morning. Bobby, I don't want to leave here. I love it so much. I don't miss Mama as much when I'm here. I wish we could stay forever.”
You know we can't Willa. Now don't upset the others. Go back to your games.”
Bobby, I'd like to talk to you privately. We will go to Miss Millie's study where we won't be disturbed.”
Did I do something wrong, Mr. Harvey,” Bobby said as Harvey closed the door behind him.
No son, let me tell you what I have in mind.”
Harvey explained that he had spoken with Oscar Crowley about adopting the children. That might not be possible just yet because he didn't have a wife. However, he may be able to be named as legal guardian of them all. Being the oldest, Bobby would be making the decision to accept his offer or not. Bobby remained quiet as Harvey explained about the house being built. He had spoken to Reggie Blackburn earlier and there was a possibility the plans could be revised enough to add two additional bedrooms. The children would stay in Miss Millie's house until their new home was ready for them to move in.
Mr. Harvey, do you have any other children?”
No, Bobby. I have never been married and I don't have children.”
We can be a handful you know. Mama would tell us that when we acted up.”
Bobby, I have spent most of my life being a miserly old fool with no friends and nobody who cared whether I was alive or dead. In the last several weeks I have gained friendships I thought would never happen, I've fallen in love for the first time since I was not much older than you are, and I have discovered a family that I want and need and I think you might need me too. I only hope you want me to be your....maybe not father, how about grandfather?”
Mr. Harvey, are you sure? I promise I will be a good son to you. I'll make sure the others are always on their best behavior. It won't be charity if you are our kin. When may I tell the children?”
Bobby, I don't want any of you to be on your best behavior all the time. I want you just to be yourselves.”
Mr. Harvey there is just one other thing. We don't need more than four bedrooms. I've already figured it out. You will have one, Teddy and I will have another, Stevie and Ralphie in the third and all the girls in the fourth. I don't think any of us could sleep in a bedroom alone.”
I'll tell Mr. Blackburn to keep going just as planned. Oh, by the way, would you mind if someday Miss Margaret moved in with us?”
I knew it was Miss Margaret you are stuck on. I think she likes you too. A man can tell things like that.”
Lets go tell the other children. Maybe we'd better not say anything about Miss Margaret just yet. She hasn't said 'yes'.”
Don't worry, she will,” Bobby said as he walked out into the yard. “Children, come give our new grandpa a hug.”
They all stopped their play and looked in Bobby's direction.
Mr. Harvey is going to be our guardian. We will live in a house by the lake. He will adopt us when he asks someone to be his wife.”
Everyone, even the children looked in Margaret's direction.

Pleasant Company

Pleasant Company

Margaret was enjoying her visit in Camden Corners. She especially enjoyed the company of Harvey Wilson. Harvey told her he had been a scoundrel until recently but she had a difficult time imagining him to be anything but charming.
Margaret and Helene were finally alone as Margaret unpacked her clothes. “Helene, I understand why you decided to move here. It is a delightful town with such nice people. I can see why you thought Neville was special years ago. It is obvious he adores you. He seems to be the only one who is concerned with waiting a respectable time after his wife's passing to marry you.”
Neville is an honorable man. I feel better knowing we didn't rush into marriage the minute poor Prudence died. It has been almost six months now. It's not as though we haven't been seeing each other. Neville is here almost every evening for supper. The extra time has given us a chance to get better acquainted. We both have changed over the years. I must admit, I am glad the wait is almost over. Now tell me about Harvey Wilson. The man is obviously smitten.”
Do you think so? I must seem like a foolish teenager but I haven't felt like this in years. Tell me, does he flirt like this with every woman?”
Helene laughed. “I don't know much about him except that he turned over a new leaf recently. I understand he was a modern day scrooge. I know he put Emma and Lily through some miserable times but they seem to have forgiven him for any wrong deeds. I think you will find the people here in Camden Corners are nonjudgmental. They accepted me and James without question even though they knew Neville was James' father and we were never married.”
Helene, when will you forgive yourself? Just think what your life would have been without James. You and George raised a wonderful son together. I know you grew to love George in time and you gave him the child he would never have had if it weren't for James.”
I know you're right. Let's not talk about my old problems. I want to hear all about Ronnie and his family. I can't believe they have moved to New York City. Wouldn't it be fun to visit them there?”
Yes, and I plan to do that after they are settled. Elaine wrote that she had been shopping on Fifth Avenue already and she can't wait to show me all the stores. They want me to think about moving there but I don't know, I'm a little too old to start a whole new life in a big city.”
You could always start a new life in a small town. I would love it if you would think about moving here. After you finish unpacking I'm going to take you on a tour of the village. That is if you are up to it after your long journey.”
I would love it. From what I saw on our way here to Millie's, it is a lovely town. Harvey mentioned a concert in the park this evening. That sounds delightful.”
Oh yes, and it's perfect for lovers.” Helene laughed as Margaret threw a sweater she had just unfolded at her friend.
Leo was happy to chauffeur the ladies around town in the new automobile. He resisted the urge to toot the horn but gave into the impulse when children walked by.
Their first stop was the antique shop. Harvey had been sitting at the table with Jonas and Oscar. His eyes lit up when he saw Margaret walk through the door. Helene introduced her friend to the the other two gentlemen.
So this is Margaret,” said Oscar. “We have been hearing all about you this afternoon. You certainly have made an impression on our friend Harvey.”
Harvey wasn't the least bit embarrassed to have it known he had been talking about Margaret. He asked the ladies to sit down.
I'm afraid we don't have time, we are taking a short tour of the shops to introduce Margaret to some of our neighbors.” Helene could see the disappointment in Harvey's face. “Harvey, would you care to join us?”
I thought you'd never ask.”
After the tour of the shops, Leo drove them to the hospital grounds and the winery. It was the first time Harvey had seen the winery for himself although he'd heard about it.
This is spectacular. Lou Rossi is mighty proud of his son as he should be. It looks like the grapes are growing nicely. They will be ready for harvesting any time now,” said Harvey.
Nick came around the corner and greeted the visitors. He had an office on the main floor. “You're right Harvey, we will be harvesting very soon. I'm hoping to recruit more grape pickers. Arthur Preston has posted notices around Greensboro, that should attract some workers.”
Nick gave them a tour of the facility. “It's quiet now but if harvesting goes well we will be fermenting those grapes very soon.”
Shall we stop by the bakery on the way home? We could pick up a cake or pie to help Addie out with dinner tonight,” Harvey said as they were headed back to the automobile.
Just as the were walking to the front door of the bakery, a little boy was running out. He bumped into Harvey and dropped his cookie. He looked up at Harvey with the biggest, saddest eyes Harvey had every seen.
I'm sorry little fella, I made you drop your cookie. Let's go back in and get you another.”
The little boy was silent but followed Harvey into the shop. Harvey picked out a dozen cookies and had Diana package them carefully for the boy. He handed them to the lad and he went running out the door again.
Who was that little boy?” said Diana.
Wasn't he in here buying a cookie just a little bit ago?”
No, I've never seen him before. He probably swiped it. That happens a lot but I don't mind. The children usually suffer from a guilty conscience and come back the next day with their pennies in hand.”
Well, now he has a dozen to eat. His punishment will be a tummy ache if he eats them all himself.”
While Harvey and the ladies were trying to choose among all the tempting baked goods, the door opened again. It was the same little boy with an older girl.
Excuse me ma'am, my little brother came out of your shop with this package of cookies that he didn't pay for. How much do I owe you for them?”
Harvey spoke up, “Your brother didn't take those cookies, I gave them to him.”
Thank you, sir, but we don't take charity. I will pay for the cookies if you let me know how much they cost.” She looked to Diana for an answer.
Diana saw the worn dress the girl was wearing. She said they were yesterday's cookies and were now a nickel for the dozen. The girl reached into her pocket and counted out 5 pennies handing them to Harvey.
Harvey knew the face of pride when he saw it and thanked the girl for the money. She and her brother left the store. Harvey glanced out the window and saw the girl hand out a cookie each to four other children. They walked down the street happily eating their cookies.
Diana had a tear in her eye. She was thinking of Iris and how she was all alone in the world the day she appeared at the fire house. Helene knew exactly what she was thinking. She had heard the story of when Iris found her way into town and into the hearts of Joe and Diana Taylor. Iris was a frequent visitor to the library and they had become very good friends.
Diana explained Iris' situation and also told how the Bentley's adopted Kenny and Becky. Will and Kate brought Billy and Butch into their home too.
The number of abandoned and orphaned children is much higher than most of us realize. It breaks my heart to think of those forgotten children.”
Margaret, you work with homeless boys in Albany.”
Yes, there is a home in Albany where boys are housed and given nourishing meals. They all attend classes in a nearby school. The older boys have jobs in the community on weekends and during the summer. I work with them on their homework a few days a week. It's not an orphanage but a place where they are safe. They operate solely on donations from the community. It's a struggle to keep it going but they have managed now for 10 years. We do have success stories. One is Gabe Plummer. He was an orphan who came to the home when he saw the other boys playing in the yard. He was 15 at the time. Almost too old to be accepted. He was such an endearing young man he was allowed to stay. It was during the winter and he was so happy to be inside a warm place he did everything he could to help the staff. He spent most of his time in the kitchen cleaning the ovens and pots and pans. He watched the cook as she prepared uninteresting but nutritious meals. He also had a job in the local diner. The cook there took a liking to him and allowed him to experiment with various spices. Before long, he was teaching the experienced cook his tricks and the diner became the most popular eatery in the area. He was allowed to take portions of the spices home. The cook there was apprehensive at first but allowed Gabe to add this and that to her dishes. For the first time, the boys were asking for seconds. To make a long story short, the people who frequented the diner collected enough money for Gabe to attend a cooking school in New York City. He has since become Chef Gabriel at Bonne Voltaire, a very famous New York restaurant. Gabe has never forgotten his past. He travels to Albany once a month to teach cooking classes to the boys. They not only enjoy the classes, it helps them when they are out on their own to prepare nutritious meals for themselves.”
I would be interested to learn more about this type of facility. I have a big house in Greensboro that might be suitable for such a venture.” said Harvey.
Isn't that your home Harvey?” Helene asked.
It is where I was existing until just a few months ago. I don't have any need for a house that big for just myself. Even though Greensboro has been home throughout my life, I am finding Camden Corners more and more appealing.”
As Leo drove through town, Margaret looked up and noticed the children they had seen earlier. “Look, an older boy has joined them, it looks as though he is sharing some good news with them. I certainly hope so, those youngsters appear to be in need of good news.”
After supper they all went to the concert. Leo drove the auto again and Leland took his horse and carriage. He didn't much like the new fangled automobiles although he had a feeling they were here to stay.
The concert was held in the gazebo in the park. They were just local people but they played their hearts out and everyone had a good time. Harvey noticed the children from earlier were standing to one side of the gazebo. Helene told about the young boy and the cookie. Millie, who had a soft spot for all children was concerned that they seemed to be ill prepared for the night that was turning cooler. They watched as the musicians packed their instruments and left the gazebo. The oldest boy led the others to the far side of the gazebo where they placed thin blankets on the hard seats. They were still nibbling on the sack of cookies from the bakery that afternoon.
I'm going to ask where those children's parents are.” said Millie.
Leland tried to hold her back. “It's not our business my dear.”
I'm making it my business. Look at the thin clothes those youngsters are wearing.” Millie walked over to them as the others followed.
Young man, do you have a place to sleep tonight?”
Yes ma'am, we do,” said the oldest boy.
May I ask where?”
I don't mean to seem disrespectful ma'am but we are just fine on our own. We don't need anyone interfering.”
If you are planning to sleep on these benches, I would say you definitely need someone to interfere. These children need a nice warm bed to sleep in and some decent food in the stomachs. Tell me, where are your parents?”
Please leave us alone. We will be fine.”
The youngest boy cried out. “Is the lady going to separate us, Bobby.”
No, Ralphie. We will stay together, I promise. Please lady, leave us alone. You are upsetting my brothers and sisters.”
Harvey spoke up, “Young man, I think you had better tell us why you are settling down for the night in this gazebo. Miss Millie has asked you where your parents are and I suggest you tell her.”
Our Ma and Pa are dead. I have a job starting tomorrow and I'm going to be able to find a place for us to live after I get paid. Now please, leave us alone.”
No, you are all coming home with us. I have a house with more bedrooms than you have brothers and sisters. You will sleep in warm beds after Miss Addie fixes you a decent meal. Now pack up your blankets.”
Harvey could tell Bobby was about to protest. He said, “If you don't come with us, the sheriff might be interested to know what your business is in Camden Corners.”
The oldest girl said, “Bobby, let's go with them. The younger children are shivering and they are hungry. I don't think these people mean us any harm. You will let us stay together, won't you ma'am?” she pleaded.
I promise you, no matter what happens, you will all be together now pile into the automobile if you would like to ride in it. Leo be especially careful with this precious cargo.”
The auto filled with children was headed toward Millie's home with the carriage following behind. “I don't know of anyone who will be able to take on seven children. Maybe I was too quick to make that promise but I won't have them separated so I'd better think of something.”
Harvey Wilson was sitting in the cramped carriage wondering if he should have Reggie Blackburn add another bedroom or two to the house he was building. Was he being foolish? He hadn't pictured himself as a father for many years. He wondered how Margaret would feel about raising a family at their ages. He would have to ask her tomorrow.

Staying Together

Bobby Warren might have enjoyed his first automobile ride if he hadn't been feeling like a failure. He wanted to jump out and take every one of his brothers and sisters with him. They would have been fine sleeping in the park tonight. It wouldn't be the worst place they'd ever spent the night. He had been assured he'd receive pay tomorrow evening for his work during the day and he planned to buy a tent he'd seen at the general store.
Leo noticed the other children were quiet and polite but obviously were delighted riding in the auto.
What's your name, young man?” Leo asked Bobby.
My name is Bobby Warren.”
The little boy sitting on his lap spoke up, “I'm Ralphie and these are my brothers and sisters. There's Teddy and Stevie and Willa and Callie.”
You forgot me cried a tiny voice from the back seat. Lucille is my name but everybody calls me Lulu.”
It's nice to meet you all. I think you are going to like Miss Millie's house. There are big comfortable beds with big fluffy comforters on them. My wife, Miss Addie, is the best cook in the world. She'll make sure you aren't hungry.”
Mister I can take care of my family just fine. I'm going to start work tomorrow at the Hightower Winery. I told Mr. Rossi I would be there at 4:00 and now you are driving us far away from there. I'll have to leave at two in the morning to be able to get there on time.”
Nonsense Bobby. I'll drive you there myself. I like to get up early to watch the sunrise.”
We will all leave together in the morning. We are used to walking wherever we go. Thank you anyway sir.”
Leo was silent the rest of the way. He knew Millie would never let these children fend for themselves again. Bobby was in for a rude awakening if he thought life was going to continue the way it had been for this family.
This is a mansion,” shouted Stevie from the back seat. “Is this where we are going to stay tonight?”
Bobby raised his voice to be heard of the excited voices. “Get your blankets and be quiet. We won't be here for long so don't start getting any fancy ideas.”
Go ahead, Bobby, catch up with them. I'll bring the blankets.” Leo wasn't sure what he would do with the worn, thin blankets but he knew Millie would never let these children use them tonight.
The horse and buggy arrived a few minutes later. Harvey could see the silhouette of the seven children standing before this huge house. The sight pulled on his heartstrings.
Come children, let's get in the warm house. Mr. Neville and Mr. Leo will find some clean clothes for you at the Mackenzie's. They have children of every size and will be willing to share until we can get you some new things.” Millie said
We can't take your handouts ma'am. Warrens always fend for themselves. Our ma never took charity even after our pa died and we aren't going to either.”
Millie ignored his words and ushered the children upstairs into the living quarters. She was grateful that her deceased husband, Mr. Stout insisted on adding several bathrooms to the house. She couldn't imagine why they would need more than one but he was thinking ahead to the future. He imagined one day the home would be used as a boarding house and wanted to be sure there were plenty of bathrooms so that no one would be forced to use an outhouse again.
The women filled tubs for each of the smaller children. Bobby couldn't resist the bathtub when he saw it. Maybe just this once. It had been so long since he had soaked in a tub and never in a tub this luxurious. His Ma use to fill up the old metal wash tub on Saturday nights and scrub his back with lye soap. He would dry himself off with a scratchy towel. Miss Millie's towel felt like velvet next to his skin.
It wasn't long before his brothers and sisters were clean and decked out in new clothes, their hair slicked into place. Miss Addie had a place set for each one of them at the big table. The adults all had their tea or brandy.
Without prompting the children held hands and said a prayer before they ate. They were trying their best not to shovel food into their mouths but it was obvious this had been the first real meal they'd had in a very long time.
After dinner they all sat in the parlor as Miss Helene read them stories from a fairy tale book. These were the same stories she read to James when he was a youngster. It didn't take long before the younger children started drifting off. One by one they were carried into beds and tucked in. Margaret sat by their bedsides singing lullabies until they fell back to sleep.
Harvey sat with Bobby. “I know how hard it has been for you to accept what you consider charity, son. I think you will find as you grow older that it isn't charity but a friend offering a helping hand. Miss Millie saw you could use a bit of help tonight and offered her hand to you and the other children. You have done what you have to do to keep your family together. You even agreed to come here tonight so that we wouldn't call the sheriff. You knew if he got involved you would be forced to separate the children and that will never be an option for you. I'd like to hear what happened to your parents if you would like to tell me about it.”
Bobby liked this old man. He seemed to be able to read his mind. In fact, in spite of himself he liked all these old people. Ever since he and the children had been on their own they experienced the darker side of humans. They were forced to travel the undesirable areas of New York City and were chased away from most establishments. Sometimes a passerby would toss them a coin or two. Bobby felt the need to unburden himself and Harvey seemed the perfect one to listen to his story.
Our pa worked on the big buildings in New York City. He was on scaffolding one day when the rope broke. He fell ten floors down. That was almost a year ago. My ma and sisters took in laundry and I worked delivering groceries for Mr. Ellis' General Store. We always had enough money to pay the rent and buy food. Ma said Pa wouldn't like it if we took charity so we didn't have any extras but except for missing Pa, we were doing fine. Then one day Ma started to cough. She got really sick and Willa went to get the doctor. He said she had Rheumatic fever and it did something to her heart. She was so weak she couldn't get out of bed. She kept getting sicker until one morning she didn't wake up. Willa tried to keep up with the laundry but she wasn't as good at it as Ma was and people stopped paying her do it. I still had my job at the store but there just wasn't very much money. I guess I should have paid the rent and not bought so much food because we got behind in the rent. When the landlord found out our Ma wasn't there and we were just children, he called the police. The policeman was very nice but he said we would have to go to orphanages. I knew that would mean we wouldn't ever be together again. After he left we took what we could carry in our arms and left the apartment. We have been on our own ever since.
Two days ago we were down by the railroad station and saw a boxcar with an open door. Without thinking I told the children to get on that boxcar and we would leave the city. By the time we arrived in Camden Corners, the children were getting tired. We got off the train without anyone seeing us. I spotted a handbill that said the Hightower Winery was looking for grape pickers. The children waited in the park while I went to see if they would hire me. I talked to Mr. Rossi and he said I could start in the morning. He said it was hard work but I know I can do it. Willa and Teddy will look for work in one of the shops. Callie is old enough to stay with the younger children while we work.”
How old is Callie, son?”
She turned 9 on her last birthday.”
Son, you have an early day tomorrow. Maybe you'd better get to bed. I am staying at the boarding house down the road but I will be here tomorrow to check on your family. I know you will do a fine job picking grapes. Mr. Rossi is a very nice man. He will be a good boss too. Don't worry about the children. They will do just fine and together we will figure out a solution to your living arrangements.”
Harvey sat by himself in the parlor sipping his brandy. Margaret walked into the room.
Are you having a hard time sleeping too? I can't stop thinking about those children and what is to happen to them,” said Margaret.
I've been thinking of nothing but them. Tell me if you think this is a terrible idea. You remember I told you Reggie Blackburn is building a house for me by the lake. There are only four bedrooms but I don't think it's too late for Reggie to add a couple more. I'm thinking of adopting the children. Am I too old to do such a thing? I've never been married and never had a child of my own, do you think they would just laugh at me?”
Harvey, I think it's a wonderful idea. I was thinking of adopting them myself. I have a big house in Albany and I know I would have enough room for all of them. I don't think either of us are too old to adopt but we may be too single. I understand they prefer placing children in two parent homes.”
That would be a bonus if you would marry me Margaret. I was planning to court you in style before I asked you but under the circumstances, maybe we could do our courting after we are married.”
Harvey, we barely know each other. It would be scandalous if we were married after such a short time. Who would have thought at my age I'd be involved in a scandal?” Margaret laughed.
We both have a lot to think about. Maybe tomorrow we can meet with Oscar Crowley. I'd better get back to the boarding house. May I give you a kiss goodnight?” he asked
Since we are contemplating a future together with our seven children, I think it would be very appropriate and also very welcome.”
Harvey took her in his arms and kissed her. He had forgotten how nice a woman felt against him. He wondered why he had wasted most of his life being an old curmudgeon. He had a good feeling that he would never be alone again and he was looking forward to sharing the future with the woman he loved.
Helene was saying goodnight to Neville when she noticed Margaret and Harvey walking hand in hand toward the porch. He kissed her again and they heard him say, “I love you Mama.”
What in the world are you saying? Don't tell me Margaret is in the family way already,” Neville laughed.
We are both thinking of being in the family way. The ready made type family,” said Harvey.
Oh that would be wonderful. Neville and I were talking about that just now. We want those children to stay together and that would mean you would be staying in Camden Corners, Margaret.”
I'd say there is a very good possibility of that happening.”
The two men walked down the hill together. “Neville, be honest with me. Do you think I'm crazy taking on a family of seven? I can't tell you why I feel the need to be a father at my age. I have fallen in love with a woman and seven children in just the last few days.”
I'd say it was about time old chap. You are long overdue.”
