A Fresh Start

A Fresh Start

Just weeks before Hillary Bella Duesenberry came into the world, Ella Pritchard walked into Will's office.
As much as I'm enjoying being with Billy and all of you, I think it may be time to return to my life in Pittsburgh. I'm afraid if I stay too much longer I may never be able to leave.”
Ella, why leave at all? Kate and I consider you a part of the family. Billy will be crushed if he loses his big sister. We have all grown to love you very much. I believe I have detected a little sparkle in your eye when James Robinson is around. I noticed he was looking in your direction during services this morning. I know you have lived in Pittsburgh all your life but with the exception of Charlotte Sanders, do you have any real ties there? Why not think about moving to Camden Corners permanently?”
Oh Vicar Will, I couldn't impose on your family. I know you don't need another church typist and that is the only position I would be qualified for.”
That's not true Ella. Why, you and Josie Blackburn were discussing the possibility of your writing a column for the Chronicle just this morning. Isn't that something you have always dreamed of doing?”
I think Mrs. Blackburn was just being polite. Billy pulled her aside and told her of my interest in writing.”
Josie Blackburn is a polite young woman, that is true. However, after her new baby and Reggie, the Chronicle is her pride and joy. She started that newspaper on a shoestring with the help of Randy Burke and together they have made it into a superior publication with readers from all the surrounding areas. Josie would never suggest you try your hand at writing for her paper if she wasn't being sincere.”
Butch happened to walk by the office while his pa and Ella were talking. “You can't leave Ella. Mr. Crowley said we can use his cabin on Cedar Lake anytime we want to. Billy and I wanted you to go fishing with us.”
Whoa sport! Remember your mother is going to have a baby any day now. We won't be going to Cedar Lake any time soon. I must admit though, it is a temptation,” said Will.
What's this talk about Cedar Lake and Ella leaving? Do you have a reason to go back to Pittsburgh, Ella? I was hoping you would stay on until after the baby is born and maybe permanently.”
You all make me feel so welcome. I just don't want to impose on you. I would love to stay until the baby is born. My only experience with newborn babies was helping mama with Billy so many years ago.” A sadness came over her but she shook it off.
You have more experience than I have Ella. We will learn together. I'm sure Grandma Alma will be a big help too. Now, no more talk about your leaving us.” Kate gave Ella a hug.
There was a knock on the door. Billy came running into the office.
Ella, you have a gentleman caller. It's James, he has flowers for you and he looks very spiffy. His hair is all slicked down and he smells of perfume.” Billy pretended to squeeze his nose with his fingers and made a silly face.
Ella blushed but was happy to hear she had company. “It's called cologne when a man uses it and I'm sure he smells very nice.” said Ella as she tried not to skip out of the room.
Hello James, what beautiful flowers.”
My Aunt Millie insisted I bring them to you. She also made me comb my hair in this ridiculous fashion and sprayed me with this terrible smelling stuff. I didn't want to hurt her feelings so I let her do it.” James laughed.
I think you look very handsome. Maybe we should take a walk outside until the perfume fades a little. You won't be helping the vicar's allergies any. Did she spray you with the whole bottle?”
It was a warm summer day but James and Ella didn't notice. James told her all about growing up in Albany thinking he was Chester Robinson's son. Chester was a fine man who married his mother knowing she was going to have another man's child. James wasn't the least bit ashamed of his parentage and wanted to set the record straight with Ella.
Ella didn't think anything unusual about the circumstances of James' birth. “I'm so happy Chester married your mother and gave you a home. There are so many children who are forced to live their entire young lives in an orphanage.” She had a tear in her eye thinking of Billy being left at the orphanage doorstep because Aunt Beatrice was afraid of her husband.
Mr. Merryweather is very proud of you James. He is the one who discovered where Billy had grown up. If it hadn't been for him and Mr. Harcourt, I still wouldn't know the fate of my little brother. I will always be grateful to them both.”
He said it was an easy task to find you and I'm awfully glad he did.” James smiled down at her. “I think my father is enjoying his new role as private investigator. He was an insurance salesman until recently. Quite the contrast in careers. I think he is just trying to occupy himself until he can officially court my mother.”
I think it's wonderful when two people find each other no matter what age they are.”
Yes, I have to agree with you there Miss Ella Pritchard.”
James took hold of her hand and they walked down by the lake to watch the bathers splashing around in the water. Ella was very happy her new family wanted her to stay in Camden Corners. She had a feeling, that summer afternoon, she would never be going back to Pittsburgh to live.
After a perfectly delightful day, Ella sat down at the desk in her room and began writing the first of many columns that would appear in the Camden Corners Chronicle. She wrote a total of fifteen columns to present to Josie the next morning. She had many more subjects in her mind, but she was feeling very sleepy and wanted to be fresh when she met with Josie. She and James were having lunch in the park after the meeting.
The next morning as James came to breakfast all eyes were on him. “Good Morning everyone, I trust you slept well. Do I have my clothes on backwards? You are all looking at me in a strange way.”
Millie said “We are waiting for you to tell us how your evening with Ella was and you know it James Robinson. Now go ahead we want all the details.”
Miss Pritchard seems to be a very nice young woman. Please pass the marmalade.”
James, stop your teasing. We know Ella is nice. We want to know everything you talked about, when will you see her again and should we start making wedding plans?”
James loved his aunt. She always said exactly what she meant. “Alright Aunt Millie. I do have to go to work today so I can't tell you everything we talked about in such a short time. I do know she is thinking of making Camden Corners her home permanently and I will encourage her to do just that. She wasn't appalled when I told her my mother and father were never married. As far a wedding plans, maybe Addie could save some rice from the pantry in case it's needed for other purposes in the future.”
Helene smiled at her son. “James, I couldn't be happier that you have met a wonderful young woman who you are thinking of sharing your life with. Why don't you invite her for supper tonight, I would like to get to know her better.”
I'll do that soon Mother. I don't want to scare her off by seeming too anxious.”
Ella was brushing her hair when there was a knock on the door. Billy and Butch came running into her room.
Ella, Pa is going to take us fishing this morning. We have to hurry if we are going to catch any today. I'll let you borrow a pair of my overalls and you can come with us. You can't go fishin' in a dress.”
Thanks fellas, but did you forget I am meeting with Miss Josie at the paper this morning? I have my columns all ready. Do you have time to read one or two?”
Billy and Butch both sat on the bed and started reading.
Gosh Ella, you are real smart aren't you? If I didn't know better I would think you grew up in an orphanage yourself. I like how you said people should think about adopting orphans. I don't feel like an orphan anymore. Do you Billy?”
Nope 'cause orphans don't have mamas and papas but we do so we aren't orphans anymore are we, Ella?”
You certainly are not. Maybe you'd better get going while the fish are still biting. Have fun you two.”
Ella was nervous about showing Josie her work. She sat and watched while Josie read each carefully written article.
Randy, if you aren't too busy would you come in here for a minute,” Josie called out to her partner at the paper, “I'd like you to read some of Ella's work.”
Ella thought that was a good sign but maybe Josie was going to have Randy tell her they didn't need her services. This is not going well she thought to herself. I should have gone fishing with the boys.
Ella, I'm sorry to be ignoring you. I am mesmerized reading your words. I find it difficult to believe you haven't had any formal training. These are wonderful. My only problem is I don't know which one to publish first.”
Randy spoke up, “Josie these are great. If you're asking my opinion, I think we should start with the one about adopting orphans. You know how I feel about adopting,” he turned to Ella. “Faith is Polly's daughter. I adopted her after we were married.”
I agree Randy. Let's get this one typeset and it will be in the next publication. Welcome to the team Ella. We can't pay you much money now but our advertising revenue is picking up. We'd like to consider you a partner. How do you feel about that?”
I'm flabbergasted. I was hoping you might decide to publish one or two of my columns but I never expected to be a partner. I was debating whether I should stay on in Camden Corners and you have made that decision for me.”
Just then there was a soft cry from behind Josie. Jonathan was making it known he was hungry. “Why don't you let Randy show you how he does his magic with his typesetter while I feed this young man. Might as well learn the newspaper business from the ground up.”
Ella was fascinated with the process and thrilled when she saw the first copy of the newspaper with her column and byline printed inside. Randy gave her the first copy as a keepsake.
I won't even charge you, partner. Although it is eating into our profits,” Randy chuckled.
Ella couldn't wait to show the paper to James. He was waiting for her on the park bench. He was so happy for her he picked her up and swung her around to the delight of the children playing nearby.
This calls for a celebration. How about dinner at the Trattoria this evening, just the two of us?”
I'd like that James, I'd like that very much.”
Meanwhile the fisherman weren't having much luck catching a fish big enough for dinner. They didn't mind because Grandma said she would have roast chicken for them if the fish weren't biting this afternoon.
Butch” Will said while Billy was on the other side of the dock, “would you like us to try to find where you came from? We could ask Mr. Merryweather to do some checking? I just don't want you to be disappointed if he isn't able to find any information about your family.”
I don't know Pa. Maybe sometime but not now. I have you and Ma and two sisters now. I even have Grandma Alma and Grandpa Melvin. My brother Cody too when he is home from college. I don't think I have room in my heart for anybody else.”
Will gave the boy a hug. He suspected whatever memories the boy did have of his past were not happy ones. “Alright son, but if you are ever curious or decide you want to look for your kin, I will help you.”
The three of them all heard a man's voice call out. “I've lost it! What will I do?” They went running to the stranger.
How may we help you sir?” said Will.
I can't find it. I don't know what to do,” said the stranger. “I'll give the first person who finds it a crisp new $100 bill.
Billy and Butch's eyes lit up until they looked in Will's direction.
We'll help you look for whatever you lost sir. You don't have to give us any money.”
What have you lost sir? My boys and I will be happy to help you look for for it.”
I have lost my soul. Yes I have. Young man, do you see that big tent going up over there? I do believe that is where we will find my soul. Come with me one and all. Brother Jeremiah Hershey is waiting to save us all from our sins. Come young people, come with me now or wait until 7:00 this glorious evening for our revival meeting. You see that blind man over there? Brother Jeremiah will help him see if only he believes.”
Will noticed the blind man, he was wearing dark glasses and carrying a white cane He carefully walked around a toy boat that was lying in the sand. “Come on boys. Time to get home to Grandma Alma's chicken.”
Ah, a non-believer in the crowd. Ladies and gentlemen, that man is a sinner but it isn't too late for the rest of you.”
My Pa isn't a sinner. He's the vicar of St. Peter's Church. He doesn't yell about it either and he doesn't call people sinners.” Butch shouted back at the man.
Let's go boys. Don't pay any attention to him. I think Grandma was putting a blackberry pie in the oven as we were leaving today.”
Will glanced over his shoulder as they left the lake. He could see the crowd getting bigger and bigger around the stranger. He had seen this type of revival before and knew the bank accounts of some in the crowd would be lighter tomorrow. There wasn't anything he could do but pray for the lost souls who would be giving Brother Jeremiah their hard earned money to save them.

Billy's Sister

Billy's Sister

Memories of his friend, Charlotte Sanders came back to Billy. He remembered how much he loved her when he was in the orphanage. Without thinking he hugged her when he saw her. Charlotte couldn't keep the tears from flowing down her cheeks.
Charlotte knew this young boy was her friend from the orphanage the minute she saw his blue eyes. They were the same color as Ella Pritchard's eyes who was sitting beside her trying to hold back her own tears.
Billy, I never thought I would see you again. I have wondered and worried about you for so many years.”
I didn't want to leave you but Miss Walker said she would make you go away if I talked to you. When I heard Cal say he was going to run away I thought if I went with him you would be able to stay at the orphanage.” Billy hadn't thought about Miss Charlotte in so long. He had put many of those memories out of his head. He looked up and saw the lady standing next to her. “Did you work at the orphanage too? I think I remember you.”
Billy, this is your sister Ella. She hasn't seen you since you were a very tiny baby.”
Will Duesenberry held his wife's hand. They both looked very worried. They could see the resemblance between their son, Billy and the young woman who had entered their home just a few minutes before.
Charlotte told how Billy's grandmother was forced to leave him at the orphanage and how she had found him and taken a special interest in him. She told of Ella's grandmother's deathbed confession that Billy had not died but he was living in the orphanage just a few blocks away. When Ella inquired about her brother, Miss Walker told her he had died because she didn't want to admit she'd been responsible for him running away. Charlotte confided the truth to Ella but there was no way of knowing where Billy was by then. Ella and Charlotte had since become good friends.
Now we have a happy ending and Ella and Billy are reunited at last,” said Charlotte.
Ella spoke up. “Vicar and Mrs. Duesenberry, I can see my brother has been well taken care of. Mr. Merryweather and Mr. Harcourt have told me how you found Billy and his friend, Butch and gave them a home. It breaks my heart that these two boys were on their own for so many years. I want to assure you that I have no intention of taking Billy away from you. I would like to stay in Camden Corners for a while and hope you will allow me to get to know my brother. That is if it's all right with you, Billy.”
Sure, I'm glad I have a sister. Can she stay here with us Ma?”
Of course she can Billy. Miss Pritchard, I am sorry I didn't suggest it sooner. Pardon my manners, I'm not thinking clearly after hearing about Billy's early years. Miss Sanders, you are welcome to stay also. We have a guest room that you both will find comfortable.”
Mrs. Duesenberry, we wouldn't think of imposing. Mr. Merryweather spoke of a boarding house in town. I'm sure Charlotte and I will be very comfortable there during our stay.”
Nonsense,” said Will. “We won't hear of it. We would like to get to know you both ourselves. Billy, why don't you show your sister and Miss Charlotte to their room. I'm sure you all are hungry after your long journey. Kate and I will rustle up some food for all of you. Gentlemen, how about a shot of whiskey? I sure could use one.”
I'd better get home to Sarah. Neville, you stay for a while. You and Will can discuss what we talked about earlier.”
Take my carriage Max, I'll walk to the boarding house later. You can come by with it in the morning.”
Max took his leave but not before reassuring Kate that everything would be alright. He was sure Ella was not about to disrupt Billy's life.
Neville told Will and Kate about Miss Walker. “The woman is very cold and it was obvious to Max and me that she is definitely in the wrong profession. We are very suspicious of her behavior. She covered up her mistake with the unlocked door the night Billy and the older boy escaped and lied to the sheriff about it. Charlotte is a very sweet girl but has a tendency to listen at closed doors and I think she knows more about Miss Walker's dealings than she realizes. I know from my former client that donations are made regularly to the orphanage and the children living there. From what Max and I observed when we visited today, the building is in ill repair and none of that money has been used as it was intended.”
Neville took his leave with the promise of checking in with the young women the next day. He wanted to sit down with Charlotte and Oscar to decide what their next step should be regarding Miss Walker. He wondered how his sister was doing today and decided to pay a visit to the Merryweather house. He knew they would all be awake and probably playing a game of charades. His step was lighter at the thought of spending some time with Helene Robinson.
Everyone gathered around the big kitchen table. Any awkwardness Kate felt disappeared after just a short time with her guests. Charlotte was a very loving young woman. Kate remembered Billy when they first met. He was belligerent toward her and Will but soon let his guard down and had become a very gentle and kind young boy. She suspected the love Charlotte had shown toward him in his early years had made an impact. Ella was a bit overwhelmed. She had lost her family at a young age and was led to believe her brother had died also. Charlotte told her he was alive but was last seen almost six years before. Now she was sitting beside her little brother and seemed to still be in shock over the happenings of the day.
Ella was only 19 years old. Her Uncle died the year after she moved in with him and her mother's Aunt Beatrice. She and the sickly old woman lived in a big Victorian house just a few blocks from where Billy had been abandoned. Ella tried to understand why her aunt would do such a thing. She knew her uncle was a mean, sour old man and that Aunt Beatrice was afraid of him. She suspected that her guilt weighed on her and that guilt had a lot to do with her illnesses. Beatrice was afraid she would be sent to prison if she tried to get Billy back after she left him at the orphanage door. In her own way she loved Ella. There was no other family and Beatrice knew Ella would be sent to an orphanage herself if Beatrice was incarcerated.
Beatrice made sure Ella went to school and graduated. Ella was working as a typist at First Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Hinkley was getting on in years and would be retiring soon. Ella knew she didn't want to continue doing that kind of work for the rest of her days. She was very interested in the newspaper business. One of the church parishioners wrote a human interest column for the local paper and that sparked Ella's interest. The gentleman saw some writing talent in Ella who had taken it upon herself to add some interesting tidbits to the church bulletin every week. The parishioners enjoyed reading her writings and the Reverend approved so she continued.
Charlotte and Ella were surprised when the sun came up the next morning that they had slept so soundly and so long. They could smell bacon cooking and hurried downstairs to find Alma Tanner standing at the old stove.
Good morning ladies, I heard we had company. Please sit down and relax. Breakfast is almost ready. I'm Kate's grandmother and Vicar Will's housekeeper. Everyone is out in the garden admiring the roses. You will have to see them later. They are beautiful with drops of dew and the sun shining down on them.
You must be Ella, I can tell by the beautiful blue eyes just like our Billy has. That would make you Charlotte. Billy hasn't stopped talking about his sister and his friend Miss Charlotte since he got up this morning. Butch has adopted the two of you also. Those poor little boys, when I think of what they went through in their younger years it just breaks my heart. They survived though and for most of the time they had each other.” She stopped what she was doing long enough to give each girl a grandmotherly hug.
Let us help Mrs. Tanner. We don't expect to be waited on.”
Will walked in at that moment. “Don't you worry about Alma. She is happiest when she is feeding all of us.”
Melvin came through the door too. “I've had to buy larger clothes two times since I met this lovely woman. It's true, she has set out to relieve the world of hunger. I'm Melvin Tanner, I'm married to dear Alma here.” Melvin said as he squeezed his new wife's shoulders.
Kate walked in with a beautiful bouquet of roses. “Good morning girls. I thought we should have some pretty flowers as a centerpiece this morning to welcome you to our home.” She filled a vase with water and set the flowers in the middle of the table.
Butch and Billy walked in.
Hi Sis. Hi Miss Charlotte, said Butch.
I told Butch you were his sister too Ella. Hope you don't mind having two brothers.” said Billy.
I'm proud to call such handsome boys my brothers.” said Ella. She didn't remember ever feeling so surrounded by love.
After breakfast Billy and Butch gave the girls a guided tour of Camden Corners. They stopped by Merryweather's to say hello just as James Robinson was headed off to work.
This is my sister Ella. James is Mr. Merryweather's son. He doesn't have the same last name. Pa says it's complicated and he'll explain it to me someday. But his last name is Robinson.”
James chuckled and said he was happy to meet Billy's sister with the different last name.
Oh, you're right James. I guess it isn't so complicated after all.”
Ella had never had a boyfriend and didn't know what to make of this handsome fellow but she knew she wouldn't mind seeing him again.
It's nice to meet you, James. This is my friend Charlotte.”
I'm sorry I'm in a rush this morning. I hope to see you again before you return to Pittsburgh.” James said as he hurried down the street. He wondered just how long they would be staying in Camden Corners. He wouldn't mind seeing Ella again sometime. He glanced back and noticed she was looking in his direction. He smiled to himself.
They visited all the shops and everyone was happy to meet Billy's sister and glad he had some answers about his past although nobody pried. They didn't have to. Butch told one and all the full history of the brother and sister.
After lunch, Neville Merryweather stopped by the Duesenberry's with Oscar Crowley and Sheriff Mendenhall. They spoke with Charlotte about the orphanage and Miss Walker. As Neville guessed Charlotte knew more about Miss Walker than she realized. They only had hearsay information, but they thought it would be enough to get the attention of the Pittsburgh authorities.
After tearful goodbyes, Charlotte left for Pittsburgh with Sheriff Mendenhall and Neville. Ella had taken a few weeks off from her job at the church and was invited to stay just as long as she was able.
Neville stayed on in Pittsburgh until Miss Walker was hauled off to jail. The sheriff in Pittsburgh was able to find enough evidence of fraud and embezzlement against Miss Walker to keep her there for many years. Neville was happy when Charlotte Sanders was named administrator of the orphanage. Everything changed after that. The draperies were opened during the day to let the sunshine in. Because of the publicity surrounding Miss Walker's dishonesty donations doubled. Charlotte was able to have repairs made and the entire facility made more comfortable for the children. The grounds were filled with playground equipment and after approval by the board of directors, the children were allowed to leave the premises with their caregivers to visit famous landmarks in the city. For the first time in their lives, the children were able to watch fireworks on Independence Day. All the children loved Miss Charlotte. She rarely closed her office door. Her new receptionist was invited to eavesdrop almost anytime she wanted. Charlotte preferred to have private conversations with Doctor Baker when he stopped by and he was stopping by more and more often. It wasn't long before Charlotte Sanders was showing off a very pretty engagement ring on her left hand.
In Camden Corners, Billy, Butch and Ella were in the waiting room of Shane Howard Memorial Hospital along with a very nervous vicar. After what seemed to be an eternity, Doctor Springer came out of the delivery room to let everyone know Kate had just given birth to a baby girl. Mother and baby Hillary Bella Duesenberry were doing well. Alma explained that Kate wanted Hillary to be named after her brothers and sister. B for Billy and Butch and ella for Ella. A tear fell from Ella's eye as James took hold of her hand.

The Search

The Search

The incident with Billy, and Marzetta Le Claire's claims to be his mother, were long forgotten. Billy went on with his life in Camden Corners without a worry about his past. Will Duesenberry could not forget his fear when there was a possibility his son would be taken away from his family.
He knew his next step would be to find any information he could about the biological families of both Billy and Butch.
He and Oscar Crowley were discussing the matter when Neville Merryweather walked through the doors of the coffee shop in Merryweather's, the antique shop operated by his sister, Millie.
Good morning gentlemen. I can see you are involved in a discussion and won't disturb you,” said Neville.
Nonsense, please sit down Neville. In fact, I wouldn't mind your opinion on this matter since you have a son you didn't know existed until recently,” said Will.
Will explained the circumstance in which Billy and Butch came into their lives and the scam that Marzetta and Anton tried to pull off.
Neville listened intently as Will told him the whole story. He thought it was incredible that the two boys were able to fend for themselves all these years and that Billy had lived like that since he was seven years old.
Kate and I haven't spoken to Butch yet about his memories. I think with a little prodding both boys will remember more as time goes by. At the present time we are concentrating on our new baby who will be arriving any day now. Oscar knows about waiting, he is waiting for two babies.”
And I wish they would both hurry up. I'm not getting any younger,” Oscar added.
I had dealings with some folks in Pittsburgh when I was still active in the agency. I do remember seeing the orphanage. I use to walk from the train station to my client's plant. The orphanage was on my way. On warm days when the children were out playing they would run up to the fence to greet me. It was as though they were craving any contact they could find outside of those high fences. I got in the habit of filling my pockets with peppermints and offering them to the children as I passed by. Don't think I haven't wondered about James growing up in a place like that. If it hadn't been for Chester Robinson, Helene might not have had a choice. I'm at loose ends now. I've all but given up the insurance agency. I was thinking of buying a house here so I have a place to bring a bride should the occasion arise.” Neville look a little embarrassed but his friends knew the circumstances and understood.
Neville, I don't know why you aren't courting Helene now. It has been several months since Prudence died. No one would fault you for moving on with your life.”
As much as I would like to be with Helene, I feel I owe it to my daughters to respect the memory of their mother. They argue with me about it all the time. Granted Prudence wasn't much of a mother to them but she was still their mother. I blame myself for her unhappiness. If I hadn't been such a coward years ago, Helene and I would have been celebrating our thirtieth wedding anniversary by now. Instead I let my father talk me out of marrying the only woman I ever loved. Money was so very important to me back then and look what it brought me. A marriage with a woman I never loved and who never loved me. On the plus side, I have two beautiful daughters who I adore.
Back to what I was saying. I'm not doing anything productive these days and wouldn't mind a trip to Pittsburgh. I could inquire at the orphanage. Maybe they would be able to give me some information. I've always wondered what it would be like to be a private investigator. Maybe this could be a start of a whole new career for me.”
Oscar spoke up. “That's not such a bad idea. I'd go with you myself but Nettie would wring my neck if I left when my grandchildren are so close to arriving. Do you know Max Harcourt? He has done his share of investigating. I'll bet this would be something he'd like to be involved with.”
Yes, I know Max. Not very well but he seems like a nice fellow. Maybe I'll stop by his place when I leave here.” said Neville. He was looking forward to the adventure and wanted to get started on the investigation right away.
I'll go with you. I haven't seen Max in a while.” Oscar said wanting to be involved in this latest mystery.
You fellows are the greatest. Thank you for your help. Maybe we will have some answers soon and then we can start worrying about Butch's family,” said Will.
Max welcomed the challenge Neville and Oscar presented to him. Sarah served the men coffee and was invited to sit with them and hear the plan.
Max, I'll pack your bag,” said Sarah “I can tell by the look in your eyes that you are ready to board the train to Pittsburgh.”
How soon can you be ready Neville?”
As soon as I can get back to the boarding house and pack a bag myself. I'll meet you at the train station.”
How do you know there will be a train going to Pittsburgh any time soon?” asked Oscar
We have strategy to work out and there is plenty of room at the station to do that.” said Max.
Neville dropped by the library to let Helene know he would be out of town for a few days.
Thank you Neville for letting me know. It's nice of you to think of me.”
I'm always thinking of you,” replied Neville. He knew this adventure would help pass the time until he would be able take her in his arms. Maybe he was being foolish to wait. All his life he had been impulsive without regard for anyone or anything. Why did he have to choose now to be sensible?
Within the hour both Max and Neville arrived at the train station. The train to Pittsburgh was leaving in two hours. Plenty of time to devise a plan to get information from the folks at the orphanage.
The men walked in through the front doors of the orphanage. It was so dim they had a difficult time adjusting from the bright sunshine outside. Max used his charm on the receptionist and she was instantly smitten. It wasn't often a handsome gentleman greeted her with such a beautiful smile. She informed Miss Walker, the administrator of their arrival.
Miss Walker greeted the gentlemen without any hint of friendliness. Max knew his charm would be wasted on this woman and deferred to Neville. There was a small spark of interest when Neville spoke softly to the woman. He made the rookie mistake of mentioning that Billy had run away from her facility. She immediately shut down.
No child has ever run away from this institution. I have no information for you gentlemen. Now if you will excuse me I trust you are capable of finding your way out.” Miss Walker turned on her heel and left the room in a huff.
Me thinks thou doth protest too much” whispered Max.
As they were leaving, they almost bumped into the receptionist who had obviously been eavesdropping.
Meet me at the coffee shop around the corner at 4:35. I have information for you.” she said as she opened the outside door for them.
Sorry I messed that one up. I know now that I should never have told Miss Walker about Billy running away.”
No harm done, she wasn't about to tell us anything anyway. I wonder what Miss Sanders has to say. She is a nervous little thing but she was adamant about meeting with us.”
Maybe your charm worked too well, Max. I wouldn't be surprised if she was hoping you show up alone this afternoon.”
Max laughed. “I know my charm is irresistible but my guess is the lady really does have some information and doesn't want her boss knowing she is about to tell us what it is.”
Neville and Max arrived at the coffee shop at 4:25. They knew Miss Sanders was meeting them after work but didn't want to miss her if she arrived early. At exactly 4:35 Miss Sanders opened the door to the coffee shop. She walked past Max and Neville and whispered for them to follow her. They did as she asked and sat at the very last table in the shop.
I'm sorry to be so secretive but if Miss Walker discovers what I am doing I will lose my job.
I remember a sweet young boy named Billy disappearing in the early morning hours of September 26th 1899. I will never forget that date as long as I live. One of the older boys found an unlocked door in the basement. The janitor forgot to lock it after he emptied the trash the night before. Cal told some of the older boys that he was planning to escape the following day. Cal was almost 18 so would have been leaving soon anyway. Apparently Billy heard Cal talking about his plan and took it upon himself to follow him. That is the story we heard from several of the boys when neither Billy or Cal reported for breakfast that day.
It was Miss Walker's duty to make sure all doors to the building were locked before she left for the day and the night shift took over. I followed Miss Walker to the basement after the boys were discovered missing and watched her lock the door and then take a crowbar and break it open. Miss Walker didn't know I saw her. I only followed her because I was worried about little Billy and was afraid something dreadful had happened to him. I hid in the basement until I was sure Miss Walker was back upstairs and in her office. Before long the sheriff arrived and was questioning Miss Walker. She told the sheriff she couldn't imagine what happened to the boys. She said security and safety were her top priority. The sheriff looked through the building and discovered the broken basement door. He told Miss Walker it was a case of runaways and he doubted they would ever be found. Miss Walker bid him farewell and went to her office with a very satisfied grin on her face.”
Miss Sanders, do you think you would recognize Billy if you saw him today? He is 12 years old now.”
I'm sure I would. Billy was one of my favorites. He was left at the front door when he was about 3 months old. I came to work that morning and discovered him there. He had a note pinned to his blanket that said his name was Billy. That was before Miss Walker came to work for the orphanage. Miss Tanner was the administrator. She left two years later to get married. Miss Tanner was a very special person. She was warm and friendly and all the children loved her. Miss Tanner let me care for Billy. I did my job during the day and spent time with him during my lunch break and after work. Billy was a happy little boy. He looked for me to come to see him every day. I loved that little baby.” A tear rolled down her cheek.
Miss Sanders, if this talk is upsetting you too much, we can postpone it to another time.”
No, I'll be fine. I need to tell you the whole story. After Miss Tanner left and Miss Walker took over, everything changed. She didn't allow me to see Billy anymore. She said I was too attached to him and I was spoiling him. When she left the building I would find an excuse to see him. When he got older I explained that I wasn't allowed to see him like I had when he was younger because Miss Walker didn't think it was right. He was just a little boy but he seemed to understand. Then that horrible day came and Billy was gone. The sheriff never did come back to tell us where he was. I have worried about him ever since.”
Neville patted the back of the girl's hand. He felt sorry for her and sorry for Billy. Maybe she would be able to identify Billy. He wondered if she would be willing to travel to Camden Corners with him and Max. Just then she continued on with her story.
It was just a few months after Billy disappeared that his sister Ella came to the orphanage. She asked to speak with Miss Walker. Ella explained that her parents died of influenza when Billy was just a baby. Her mother's aunt Beatrice came to get Ella and Billy to take them home with her. It seems Beatrice's husband did not want a crying baby in his house disturbing his sleep. He insisted the boy be delivered to the orphanage that very night. The next morning Ella woke up and her aunt told her that her brother had died during the night. Ella was only 8 years old and had lost her entire family. Her aunt took care of her as she was growing up. Shortly after Ella turned 18, her aunt became very ill. On her deathbed she confessed to Ella that her brother didn't die and that she had taken him to the orphanage.
That very day Ella came to the orphanage looking for her brother. Miss Walker asked her to step into her office. She closed the door but, of course I listened at the key hole. Miss Walker told Ella her brother had died when he was 6 months old.
Poor Ella, she was beside herself. It was as though she lost her brother all over again. I stopped her before she left that day and asked her to meet me right here in this coffee shop. I told her about Billy and how he left with an older boy. I tried to assure her that Cal would take care of Billy although I wasn't sure I believed that myself. Ella and I have since become friends. I'm afraid to ask if you two know anything about what happened to dear Billy.”
Max told her that Billy had a memory of a train station that had a sign that read Pittsburgh. He explained that he and a younger friend had been adopted by a vicar and his wife and was very happy and secure in his life.
Miss Sanders would you be willing to travel to Camden Corners to meet Billie, we would gladly pay your way.”
Mr. Harcourt I do have some money of my own. I would be able to pay the fare but I would want Ella to come with me. Even if your Billy is not the same one I remember, I wouldn't feel right about not telling her about this.”
Neville spoke up. That would be fine. I know this is an imposition with your employment. If there is any way we can smooth it over with your boss we would be willing to speak with her.”
No, I have an aunt who lives in Greensboro. Miss Walker knows she has been ill. I will tell her she has taken a turn for the worse and I need to have a few days off. I hope the Lord forgives me for this lie but I must see Billy if there is a chance he is that special little boy.”
Max and Neville waited for Miss Sander's return. Miss Walker wasn't happy that Charlotte would be leaving town for a few days but she did understand and wished her well.
They went directly to Ella Pritchard's home where Max and Neville told her of the possibility that her brother could be the boy known to them as Billy Deusenberry.
I don't care how improbable it is that my brother is alive and well and living with a good family. I want to see the boy myself. If he is indeed my brother I want to assure you I have no intention of disrupting his life. I can be packed and ready to go in 20 minutes. Charlotte, I'm so glad you will be going too. I'll gladly pay for your ticket.”
Do I look like a pauper? Everyone wants to buy my ticket. I can well afford the passage and it will be worth every penny if this young boy is truly our Billy.”
The group arrived at the train station separately to avoid any suspicion should Miss Walker happen by on her way home from work.
Miss Walker did indeed pass by the station and glanced in the window. She saw Charlotte Sanders sitting by herself on the bench. Behind Charlotte were the gentlemen who were inquiring about the child who escaped her care a number of years ago. Good, they are leaving Pittsburgh she thought to herself. There was another young lady who looked vaguely familiar. She was seated three rows back and studying her ticket. Miss Walker had a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. Something does not seem quite right she thought but dismissed it. No one will ever find out that it was my fault those boys escaped. I can't afford any kind of investigation into my operation of the orphanage.
The train pulled into the station. Neville's carriage was just where he left it that morning. There was no way to alert Will and Kate about their arrival with the young ladies so they went directly to their house. Kate opened the door and welcomed them all into the parlor.
Ella and Charlotte could feel their hearts beating wildly when the front door opened and a young boy called out. “Miss Charlotte? Is that really you?”

The Scam

The Scam

Billy tried to wiggle out of the lady's arms without kicking her in the shins. Before the Duesenberrys adopted him, he would have done just that to get away. She finally let him go enough for him to back away.
You aren't my ma. My ma is Kate Duesenberry. She and Will adopted me and I'm their boy now. I don't have a real ma. What kind of a dumb name is Philippe anyway?”
Oh my darling Philippe. Don't you see? You were stolen from me when you were just a wee babe. I named you Philippe after your brave deceased father, Philippe Le Claire the famous tightrope walker who fell during his performance and landed in the jaws of a nasty old lion.”
Butch and Kenny shuddered at the thought. Anton, the instigator of the scam just shook his head hoping the dumb woman would just stop with her stories. He couldn't wait until he had the money from this scam in his pocket. He had no intention of keeping his promise to marry the wretched woman.
Anton stepped out from the shadows. “My dearest, what have we here? I can't believe my eyes. Could this possibly be your long lost son Philippe? Young man you look exactly like my fiancee. You surely are her beloved son.”
This is crazy. I'm not your son. My name is Billy Duesenberry. I was adopted fair and square.” Billy started running and didn't stop until he got to the only home he'd ever had. He ran past Alma, Kate and Melvin who were sipping tea at the kitchen table. Without a word he went to his room and closed the door. He couldn't let anyone see him crying. He didn't ever want to go back to the circus and that woman and her lies. She was not his mother.
Butch and Kenny came running in behind him. Butch said “Billy's ma is in the circus. She said his real name is Philippe and someone stole him when he was a baby. He ran away from her because he said she was lying. She looks like she could be his ma though.”
Kate went to Billy's room and knocked on the door. “Billy, let's talk about this. I know you are upset but hiding in your room won't make the problem go away.”
Kate could hear him whimpering and knew Billy well enough to know he would not leave the privacy of his room until he had cried it out.
Come downstairs as soon as you are ready Billy. Butch has gone to find your pa. We love you and will find an answer. If this lady is truly your mother, it will be a blessing that she found you. You will never stop being our son. No matter what.”
A worried Kate walked back into the kitchen. Alma and Melvin understood that Billy needed to be alone right now. “We should leave and let you and Will handle this without our interference.”
Grandma please don't leave. You and Melvin are our family too. I don't know what we will do if we have to give Billy up. I know I should be rejoicing that he and his birth mother have found each other but I can only think of the void it will leave in our family if he is separated from us.
Child, you don't know that this woman is who she claims. I'm often mistaken for Thomas Jefferson's son but I can assure you he is definitely not my father.”
The women laughed and hoped he was right.
Just in case this woman is up to no good, I think I'll take a stroll over to Oscar Crowley's and see how he suggests we handle it.”
Butch came back shortly with Will. “Butch filled me in. I saw Melvin on the way here and he told me he was going to ask Oscar his opinion. That's a good idea. My first inclination is to pay a visit to this woman who claims to be Billy's mother but I think I will wait to see what Oscar recommends.”
Kate are you doing alright? I don't want you overly stressed with the baby coming so soon.”
Don't worry about me. I just wish I could hold Billy in my arms but you know how he is. He would rather die than let anyone see him cry.”
I'm not crying Ma.” Billy said
He ran into his mother's arms. “You are my only ma and I don't want to see that lady ever again.”
Kate tried not to let the tears flow but she couldn't hold them back. She loved her boy and she couldn't bear the pain he was feeling.
Pa, do you think she could take me away from you?”
I don't know Billy. First we have to find out if she really is your mother. We have never really talked about what you do remember about your life. I know you said you never saw your mother but what are your first memories?”
I remember being in an orphanage with a bunch of other kids. One of the older boys told me he was going to run away. He said I could go with him so I did. We were running down the street together but he ran too fast for me and I couldn't catch up. I was sorry that night because it was cold and I didn't have a bed to sleep in. I couldn't find my way back to the orphanage and I was afraid I'd get a whipping for running away if I did.”
Do you remember what city the orphanage was in?”
I think it was in Pittsburgh. I remember seeing that sign when I was outside playing on the lawn. The train station was on the next block and there was a big sign that said Pittsburgh. I didn't know it was a city until a few years later.”
That's a big help Billy. It may be a clue to your identity.”
Melvin came back with Oscar. Will could tell by the expression on Oscar's face that this situation could put Billy's adoption in jeopardy.
Will told him what Billy had said about Pittsburgh. “It's a start. I think our first step should be to visit with the woman who claims to be Billy's mother.”
I don't want to see her.” Billy said
Billy, your pa and I will go to see her. You stay here with your family. Do you remember if the lady said her name?
I think the slimy guy called her Marzetta,” said Kenny who didn't miss a trick. He was standing behind a post when the lady was holding onto Billy. He came out and acted surprised, but he was watching all along so he wasn't really surprised.
That helps Kenny, thank you.”
Be careful you two. If this is a scam maybe we should call the sheriff to go with you.” Melvin said.
I don't think there will be a problem. Kate, I will invite Marzetta back here if it's alright with you. I think we will be able to get to know her better if we have her in the house.”
Kate shook her head in agreement and gave her husband a hug.
Will and Oscar climbed down from Oscar's carriage. They parked far enough away from the big tent so they could observe the circus people before they stated their business and because they didn't want the horses to be spooked by the other animals. Will spotted Marzetta right away.
Oscar look at that woman, she does look like our Billy. I can feel Billy slipping away from us.”
Don't jump to any conclusions, Will. Do you see that fellow lurking in the background? He saw us pull up and I think he may have been expecting us. I agree with Kenny's assessment. He is a slimy guy.”
Good afternoon ma'am. My name is Will Duesenberry. My son Billy was here this morning and told me someone here claims to be his mother.”
How do you do vicar? My name is Marzetta Le Claire. I am so happy to have found my long lost son. You have to admit he does look like me. You know he was stolen from me when he was a baby.”
Mrs. Le Claire, I'm Oscar Crowley, a friend of the family. I wonder how long ago was your son stolen.”
Oh I don't remember it must be about twelve years now.”
That foolish woman, she is going to ruin everything.
Anton stepped out from behind the post. “Gentlemen. I am Mrs. Le Claire's intended. You can imagine she doesn't have her wits about her after discovering her son today. I'd rather you didn't ask her any questions in her fragile state.”
Oscar didn't think the woman looked very fragile and appeared to able to resume her normal activities shortly after discovering her child who had been missing for twelve years.
I understand Mrs. Le Claire. I would like to invite you to our home for supper this evening. It will give you a chance to get to know Billy.”
She and I will be there.” said Anton
Supper is at 5:30 and we are in the church house next to St. Peter's. I am the vicar there but then you already knew that, didn't you Mrs. Le Claire?”
Oscar was wondering if Will had picked up on Marzetta's slip. She called Will vicar. How did she know that unless she had gotten some information from someone.
Oscar and Will walked around to the elephants. They pretended to be admiring the huge animals but kept their eye on Anton as he grabbed Marzetta's arm roughly and practically dragged her to his trailer.
They heard a rustling sound and looked up to see a man in a clown suit. “Meet me over behind the concession stands. I have information for you.”
Oscar and Will walked leisurely to the concession stand which was open and selling lemonade. They bought a couple of drinks and walked behind the stand where Chuckles was waiting for them.
Your boy Butch was here earlier. A nice kid. He told me all about him and Billy and how you adopted them. I've known Marzetta for the last fifteen years and she never had a baby or even a husband. Marzetta Le Claire is her stage name. She is Edna Mason and she is from a small town in Texas called Paris. That's the closest she's ever been to France. Anton is a con man. I'm sure he overheard my conversation with Butch. Marzetta does look a little like your boy but I can assure you she is not his mother. All the girls around here fancy themselves in love with Anton Hamlin. If any of the others resembled either of your boys they would have been the one he selected to con you. Anton probably promised Marzetta he would marry her if she went along with his scheme. Marzetta is a sweet kid but not too bright. I suspect she will be out of a job when this whole thing is over and Anton will be on to his next victim. Just give him time. He'll be asking for money soon.”
Oscar and Will thanked Chuckles for his help. Their next stop was to Sheriff Mendenhall's office. The sheriff changed out of his uniform and would be joining the Duesenberrys for supper.
I hope Alma has prepared enough food for all of us Will. Do you mind if I stop by to pick up Nettie as well. She would love to watch the likes of Anton try to weasel his way out of this one.”
The more the merrier. I can't wait to tell Billy he doesn't have anything to worry about. This whole thing has made me wonder if maybe we shouldn't check a little more into both boy's backgrounds. We don't want this thing to happen for real in the future.”
All the way to the Duesenberry home, Marzetta was begging Anton not to make her go through with it. “I just have a bad feeling about this Anton. What if they want to get rid of the kid and then I'll be stuck with him.”
You're not going to be stuck with the kid. That vicar guy won't give the kid up. His friend looked like he had money. Did you see the fancy carriage he had. I'm sure we hit the jackpot with these two. That reminds me. Watch what you say. You called the guy vicar and you wouldn't have any way of knowing that. I don't think they caught it but be careful tonight.”
As Will predicted, the whole family celebrated when they were told Marzetta was not Billy's mother. They agreed to go along with the charade until Anton offered to sell the boy and that is when Eb Mendenhall would become the sheriff again.
Anton didn't like so many people sitting around the table when he got there. The more people the more chance Marzetta would spill the beans.
Billy was very polite to the guests. He held the chair out for Marzetta when she sat down and even referred to her as ma at one point. Everyone was full of questions. The questions seemed innocent enough but were all meant to catch Marzetta off balance. It worked. As much as she prided herself on being an actress, she couldn't keep her story straight. Anton was afraid she would ruin everything if he didn't act quickly.
Vicar Duesenberry, I wonder if we could have a little chat in the other room.” said Anton.
Anything you have to say may be said in front of our friends and family. Go ahead sir. Let's chat here.”
Anton didn't like it but it was now or never. “I can see you are a happy family and dear Philippe seems to be an important part of it. As much as Marzetta's heart will break, she is willing to let Philippe stay right here with you. Of course, she will have much pain and suffering and I'm sure you would be more than anxious to compensate her for that.”
Compensate her in what way, sir?”
Oh $20,000 should cover it.”
Marzetta choked on her glass of wine but said nothing.
Sheriff Mendenhall brought out his badge and showed it to a stunned Anton. “Anton Hamlin, you are under arrest for attempted extortion.”
Anton felt the metal of the handcuffs around his wrists. “How did you know? Did that stupid woman give it away when she called you vicar?”
No, you gave it away when you were lurking behind the post in the tent this afternoon. A decent man would have been standing beside his fiancee not hiding in the shadows.” Will didn't think it was necessary to tell him that Chuckles was the one to fill them in.
Anton and Marzetta were hauled away. Billy was especially happy to see them go.
He changed his mind about going to the circus and along with the rest of the town had a wonderful time watching the performances. Butch introduced him to Chuckles. The entire Duesenberry family was grateful to Chuckles for telling the truth about Anton. Billy was glad there wasn't any one else in the circus who looked like him.

Cassandra's New Baby

Cassandra's New Baby

Will our new baby be here today, Mama?”
Cassandra Rossi has having a difficult time understanding why her baby was taking so long to be born. Unfortunately she heard her mama talking to Diana Taylor about her suspicions at the very first sign of her pregnancy. Over eight months was a long time for a little girl to wait for the birth of her brother or sister.
I don't know Cassandra but I don't think it will be too much longer. Come sit down and eat your oatmeal, I put butter and cream on top for you.”
Lucinda's pregnancy had been so different this time around. She felt bigger and more uncomfortable. Maybe she had just forgotten since it had been close to seven years since her last experience. She looked at Cassandra and remembered when she was born. She remembered how nervous Paul was about holding his daughter. He was used to being around children because he grew up in an orphanage but he was never around the babies, especially when they were this tiny. Those were happy days. Lucinda thought they would go on forever. She still felt sadness when she thought of her life with Paul. It seemed so long ago that she was having a hard time picturing his face.
You are lost in thought this morning.” came the booming voice of her husband, Nick.
I guess I am. I was thinking back to when this little missy was born. Nice memories but sad too.”
Nick squeezed his wife's hand. He understood how Lucinda felt about her first husband, Paul. Nick didn't resent the fact that he was still a part of her life if only in memory. They had grown up together in the orphanage and had been best friends until his murder several years ago. He helped to keep Cassandra's memories of her Papa Paul alive too. Nick would be forever grateful to the man he never knew for bringing this amazing child into the world.
Other than nostalgic, how are you feeling?”
Like Wally Wallace's prize cow! I'm getting as impatient as Cassandra to hold this little squirt in my arms.”
Cassandra giggled. “You don't look like a cow, Mama.”
Maybe we should get her a bale of hay and a cow bell,” laughed Nick.
Quiet you two. It's bad enough to feel this way, I don't need your teasing me too.” Lucinda's laugh turned to a grimace.
Are you alright?” Nick jumped out of his chair.
I'm fine, I think I just had a labor pain.” with that another followed and then again and again.
Cassandra, run down to Kenny's house and ask him to get Doc Julie. Darn it, we need better phone service in this town.”
Watch your language Nick. You're going to be a papa very soon and I don't want you teaching our children words like that.”
It could have been a lot worse,” said Nick
I know and I might be using some choice ones myself before the day is out.” Lucinda said as she doubled over in pain.
Doc Julie arrived along with Caroline, within a half hour.
Lucinda I don't think we have time to get you to the hospital. I do believe this little Rossi is about to arrive.”
You and Josie Blackburn certainly don't waste any time delivering your babies,” said Caroline who had her own little one only two months before.
Nick took Cassandra by the hand and walked out into the yard. He didn't want her to be frightened for her mother if Lucinda let out a scream. His wife was a trooper though and suffered silently. As much as she would like to have yelped and used some of those colorful words she and Nick talked about, she didn't want to frighten Cassandra either. It wasn't long until Caroline walked out of the house and said come meet Daniel Nicola Rossi.
It's a boy!” shouted Nick and Cassandra in unison as they ran into the house to meet the newest member of the family.
Daniel wasn't concerned with being silent.
Cassandra looked down at her little brother and said. “Doesn't he like us Mama? He is crying so hard.”
I think he likes us just fine. Little babies cry. You did the same thing when you were born and you like us, don't you?”
Yes Mama, I like you a lot. Hello Danny, I'm your sister and my name is Cassandra. I'm going to help Mama take care of you. She said I could fetch your diapers and help with your bath.”
Little Danny's crying stopped. “You have helped your mama already, Cassandra. Your brother must like the sound of your voice because he isn't crying anymore,” said Caroline.
The anticipation was high for the Independence Day parade. Lou Rossi would be marching in the parade and carrying the United States flag. He and Anna had become United States citizens and were celebrating the birthday of their new country.
Babies were in abundance at the parade. It was early enough in the day that it wasn't too hot for them. Anna Rossi was enjoying being a grandmother to Daniel. She was a frequent visitor to Nick and Lucinda's home. Lou had more fun with the older children although he enjoyed watching his wife with the littlest Rossi.
The day was a happy one with picnics in the afternoon and fireworks after dark. The talk was about the circus coming to town the following week. This was the first time the troupe would be setting up the big top in Camden Corners. Mayor Horton had been instrumental in their decision to stop in the village this year.
The circus train pulled into town on schedule. Practically the whole town came out to welcome them to Camden Corners.
Billy and Butch Duesenberry remembered seeing circuses setting up before. It was one of the rare times in their former lives that they enjoyed being on their own. Circus people were always friendly to them and never shooed them away. They were always allowed to watch the circus performances from behind the curtain.
Pa, may Butch and I watch them set up the big tent after we finish our chores this morning?” said Billy who always remembered to ask permission before he and Butch set out for any adventure.
If your beds are made and your clothes put away you may go just as soon as you help Grandma Alma with the dishes from breakfast.” said Will.
Let the boys go, Will. I'll help Alma with the dishes.” said Melvin Tanner, Alma's new husband.
Billy and Butch finished their breakfast in record time. They kissed their mother and grandmother goodbye and were off down the street stopping by Kenny Bentley's on the way. Kenny was waiting for them on the porch and yelled goodbye to his family inside.
Billy and Butch had been adopted by Will and Kate Duesenberry the previous year. The boys were not related to each other but had been the only family either had ever known. Neither boy could remember their mothers or if they were ever part of a family. They had both been abandoned at some time in their young lives. They jumped off a train in Camden Corners after being caught stowing away. Will and Kate happened along just at that moment. Will was the vicar of the local church and a confirmed bachelor until he met Kate his housekeeper's granddaughter. They married, adopted Billy and Butch and were expecting a baby at the end of the month.
Kenny had never seen a circus before and was fascinated with the elephants. The elephant handler was always happy to show his visitors around. He found that boys usually wanted to help walk the animals and he was glad to share his workload.
Butch's favorite were the clowns. He sought them out and happened upon one clown who they called Chuckles. Chuckles loved the circus himself and loved to talk. Butch happened upon him as he was practicing his act. Chuckles was glad to have an audience and loved the sound of the boy's laughter as he performed his silly tricks. He showed Butch some of his magic tricks and even taught him one or two.
Butch was a chatterbox and today was no exception. He told Chuckles all about his and Billy's life before they came to Camden Corners and were adopted. Chuckles listened to every detail because he had been a homeless boy too. He told Butch how lucky he was to have found people to take him in and love him because Chuckles never did find a home until he joined the circus when he was 15 years old. As Butch and Chuckles talked, they didn't notice Anton Hamlin lurking in the background taking in every word that came out of Butch's mouth.
After saying goodbye to Chuckles, Butch went off to find Billy and Kenny. He knew Billy would be where the elephants were and walked to that area with Anton following discreetly behind him. Anton took one look at Billy and a plan was forming in his mind.
Anton Hamlin was a trapeze artist. He had been performing for 25 years and was not as quick and agile as he once was. He was a conniver who knew eventually one of his schemes would pay off and he would be able to retire in luxury. He was interested in Butch's history and knew there had to be money in there someplace. Once he saw Billy he knew he was about to strike it rich. He needed Marzetta to go along with his plan. She wanted the good life too and best of all, she wanted Anton.
Marzetta, drop whatever it is you are doing. I want you to listen carefully. There is a young boy out there that could be your son. I want you to tell him you are his long lost mother. Tell him your precious baby was stolen from his crib when he was just a few months old. You have been looking for him all these years. He looks to be about 12 years old. See if you can figure out his age and give him a date he was born. From the story Butch told. The kid wouldn't have any idea when his birthday is.”
Anton, how can I be his mother? I have never had a kid.”
I know that, stupid. You are just going to tell him that you are his mother and then we will be able to get money out of his folks. They will want to keep him and will gladly pay us what we ask. Don't you see? It's a perfect plan.”
Don't call me stupid Anton. I'm not stupid. I'm just as smart as you are.”
Yeah, alright. You aren't stupid. Just do what I say.”
But Anton. I can't be that kid's mother. I'm not a married lady.”
Anton was getting frustrated. He wanted to shake this idiot woman. He could taste the money this scheme would bring his way but he'd have to deal with Marzetta and it wasn't going to be easy.”
I'll tell you what. If you can pull this off, I'll marry you.”
Anton do you mean it? We can get married. I'll do anything you say.”
After going over the plan again and again with Marzetta, Anton thought she was convinced this kid was really her son. She wasn't too bright but she was a fairly decent actress and the kid was a dead ringer for her. He sent her on her way with his fingers crossed.
Marzetta leisurely strolled over to the elephant stall. She never did like those smelly, wrinkled things. They frightened her but she would just have to fight her fear. Anton was going to marry her and that was all she cared about.
She spotted him. Anton was right he looked like he could have been her son. What was the name Anton told her to call him? She couldn't remember. Oh well, she thought Philippe was a wonderful name. Yes, her son would be called Philippe.
Billy was still making friends with the baby elephant when he suddenly felt someone grab him and squeeze him tightly yelling “Phillipe! Phillipe! My long lost son. I have finally found you.”
Anton was cringing in the corner. She was laying it on a little too thick. She needed more practice.
Billy! That lady looks just like you.” shouted Butch.
